New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern described the twin shooting - the worst in her country's history - as a terror attack.

A Saudi Arabian man, two Malaysians and an unidentified number of Jordanians are among those wounded.

Scott Morrison, the Prime Minister of Australia, has since confirmed that one of the four suspects detained was indeed an Australian-born citizen.

Anwar Gargash, the United Arab Emirates' minister of state for foreign affairs, tweeted, "heartfelt condolences" to New Zealand.

New Zealand police said 49 people were killed. "New Zealanders can't believe this could happen on our own soil".

"Very quickly we identified that we're going to have to increase police presence around mosques, around houses of worship", said NYPD Deputy Commissioner of Intelligence & Counter-terrorism John Miller.

However, the killers were not on any watch list confirmed by the authorities.

"Our deepest sympathies and thoughts are with everyone affected by the horrendous terrorist attack against Muslim worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand today".
