17 killed in fire at Delhi's Karol Bagh hotel”

The dead included at least two women and a child who could not escape the leaping flames and thick smoke in Hotel Arpit Palace in the commercial-cum-residential district of Karol Bagh.

The death toll later rose to 17, including a mother and child who tried to escape the flames by jumping from an upstairs window.

About 120 people were inside the six-story hotel at the time of the fire.

"There was wooden panelling on corridors because of which people could not use corridors to evacuate", another fire officer told reporters.

A fireman stands outside the hotel where a fire broke out in New Delhi, India, February 12, 2019. Many were severely injured and have been rushed to Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital. Most people jumped out of the upper floors of the hotel to save their lives.

Duke investigating sexual assault allegation made against former basketball player
The statement was issued hours after the second woman came forward Friday to accuse Fairfax, a Democrat, of sexual assault . He called on "all appropriate and impartial investigatory authorities, including the FBI", to investigate the claims.

Deputy fire chief Virenda Singh said that 35 people had been rescued adding: 'Seventeen people are no more, they died because of suffocation, not fire'.

"All norms were followed here; license is issued only after inspection".

Delhi Urban Development Minister Satyendra Jain visited the accident site and inspected the area.

In 2017, 14 people were killed, also in Mumbai, when a huge blaze tore through a popular restaurant.

Fire was reported on third and fourth floor, but the blaze spiralled down as well.

Democrats Seek Green New Deal to Address Climate Change 7 February 2019
President Donald Trump has scrapped Obama's plan, which imposed emissions limits on coal-fired power plants, as a job-killer. Ocasio-Cortez also downplayed her absence from a select panel studying climate change .

Union minister K.J. Alphons said the emergency exit of the Arpit Palace hotel was "too narrow" and also locked.

He, however, forgot that Fire Department comes under Delhi government.

There were 53 people in the 45-room budget hotel, which had a canopy on the terrace, housing what appeared to be a restaurant.

Common Delhiites are not concerned because they are ignorant about the enforced fire safety rules & regulations and building bye laws in the national capital.

Delhi authorities often launch raids to enforce building codes, fire safety measures and evacuation procedures.
