Woman dies after she was found trapped in donation box in Toronto”

A woman died after she was found partially stuck inside a clothing donation bin in Toronto, police said.

.

The department received a call around 1:40 a.m. and arrived to find the woman "injured and unconscious", according to a tweet by the Toronto Police Operations Centre.

Sidhu said fire services cut through the box in order to extract her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four people have died over the past few years in clothing donation bins in the Lower Mainland.

The death marks the second time in only eight days that a Canadian has died while apparently trying to remove items from a clothing-donation bin. She said the matter is not considered suspicious and no criminal investigation is underway.

"They are set up in a way to make it hard for people to have access to the inside of the box but obviously (they are) not safe enough".

The death appears to be accidental, police told CBC.

The Toronto woman's death also marks at least the eighth such incident since 2015.

The spate of deaths has led some to call for the bins to be redesigned or removed.

"We will continue to work with our bin manufacturer, municipal authorities, design experts and community partners to formalize and promote the adoption of industry-wide safety standards to keep our communities safe", stated the press release.

Agro said Rangeview is advising charities to remove those bars for the time being until safer designs can be developed and built. "That would be painful, and it would not be quick".

Last-minute bid could keep Sears from being liquidated
Sears chairman Eddie Lampert proposed to buy out the company as a whole through his hedge fund, ESL Investments, for $4.6 billion. The company has been seeking a bidder willing to keep the remaining stores open as part of a reorganization of the business.

Jeremy Hunka of Union Gospel Mission in Vancouver said the numerous deaths, five of which took place in B.C., are unacceptable.

In a letter to the city's licensing committee, which was reviewing the donation bin bylaw, Tory asked the committee to include safety as part of that review and to speed up the process.

Instead, the engineering instructor said he believes retrofitting the individual bins would be a less expensive and sustainable option before a safer, standardized design can be developed in the future.

Last week, Burnaby Mayor Mike Hurley said the city was considering its own approach to the bins.

Tory said the review will also address whether the boxes are placed in proper locations and if they are the best way to go about collecting used clothing in the first place.
