Trump Vows to 'Never Back Down' on Border Wall Demand

Trump Vows to 'Never Back Down' on Border Wall Demand”

The survey found that a growing share of Americans trust what Trump says less than they did previous presidents.

Trump has rejected a call by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, one of his staunchest congressional supporters, to reopen shuttered agencies for three weeks while he holds more talks with Democratic leaders about his plan for a wall along the 3,200-km southern USA border. Congressional Republicans were watching Trump for a signal for how to move next, and Democrats have not budged from their refusal to fund the wall and their demand that he reopen government before border talks resume. Some reporting suggests she and several other Democratic lawmakers were scheduled to leave Thursday afternoon.

Rep. Nita Lowey of NY, the top Democrat on the Appropriations Committee, said the bills offer "additional options" to end the shutdown and would give lawmakers time for negotiations on border security and immigration.

On day 27 of the shutdown, the rhetoric continues to show both sides of the standoff refusing to step off their positions that triggered the funding lapse shortly before the holidays last month. They have offered $1.3 billion for this year in new border security funds to pay for a range of high-tech and other tools at the border. The impasse is draining the finances of hundreds of thousands of federal employees going without paychecks.

Now why, you ask, did she earlier ask Trump to postpone his State of the Union address (or deliver it in writing)?

Trump walks out of shutdown talks with a 'bye-bye'
Chuck Schumer , the Democratic leader in the Senate, told journalists: "The president just got up and walked out". Exiting the White House, Democratic leaders did not dispute the substance of Trump's retelling of events.

The White House said Trump personally payed for the spread. When Pelosi was the House Minority Leader in years between 2016 and 2018, she opposed the idea of impeaching Trump.

Also, with the Michael Cohen testimony looming on 7 February, television-obsessed Trump likely wants to keep the focus on himself and the shutdown rather than on porn star payoffs.

"We are open to resolution and negotiation", White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway told VOA News on Monday, indicating that communication is under way between the executive branch and Democrats, but she provided no details. Numerous departments and agencies, including Homeland Security, Transportation, Justice, Commerce, State, Agriculture, Interior, the Treasury, Housing & Urban Development, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Food & Drug Administration (FDA), the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and others have been affected.

The speaker of the House also complained to the media that she hadn't received a response from the president to her letter telling him he was not invited to give his State of the Union speech while the shutdown goes on. Maybe he thinks it's OK not to pay people who do work.

Trump threatens to yank funds for California wildfire recovery
He has said he'll hold back federal dollars for fire disasters before, but has not executed on that threat. Daryl Osby, the Los Angeles County Fire Chief, said in November: "We're in extreme climate change now".

Trump, meanwhile, has been mum on the matter of the State of the Union date and, according to Pelosi's office, has not responded to the letter.

Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham, Rob Portman, and Susan Collins, plus Democratic Sens.

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., said it was "unbecoming of the speaker to do this".

A top House Republican, Louisiana's Steve Scalise (skuh-LEES'), tweets that Democrats are interested only in obstruction.

Trump declined to address the stalemate over the speech Thursday during a visit to the Pentagon, simply promising that the nation will have "powerful, strong border security".

Cleveland Browns Can’t Spoil Baltimore Ravens AFC North Title Party
Jackson's headfirst leap to the end zone, his hands fully extended with the ball, was ruled a touchdown on the field. The Browns went three-and-out after a Mayfield pass went off a wide-open Jarvis Landry's helmet at the Browns' 35.

A White House official speaking Friday on the condition of anonymity to address Pelosi's charge said it didn't leak her plan. "So we'll just have to see how it comes", Said Pelosi.
