China court orders retrial for Canadian jailed for drug smuggling

China court orders retrial for Canadian jailed for drug smuggling”

A government spokesman did not specify when the Canadian was released or returned to Canada.

Schellenberg played an "important role" in drug smuggling and was potentially involved in global organised drug trafficking activities, said the court, and passed his case back to the lower Dalian court for a retrial without specifying a date.

Teacher Sarah McIver, from Alberta, was held for "unlawfully working in China".

The Chinese newspaper explained that the trafficking of drugs is a felony in China, especially when the amount is enormous. It added that Canadian diplomats were in court for the appeal.

Kate Middleton And Meghan Markle Share Sweet Moment At Royals’ Christmas Service
Well-wishers brought bouquets of flowers for the family and wished them a Merry Christmas as they walked by. Most of the royals were in attendance, except for the Duke of Edinburgh and the Duchess of Cornwall.

It's not clear yet who is representing Schellenberg or when the retrial may take place.

Both China and Canada have insisted McIver's case was different from Kovrig's and Spavor's.

Global Affairs Canada "confirms that a Canadian citizen, who was detained in China in December, was released and has now returned to Canada", spokesman Richard Walker said, without providing further details.

The detention and release follows two other instances earlier this month, in which former Canadian diplomat, Michael Kovrig, and businessman Michael Spavor were detained in China.

MLB Rumors: Here’s When Manny Machado Expects To Sign With New Team
Machado hit.297/.367/.538 with 37 home runs in 162 games between the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers in 2018. The Yankees will have to do more work on their starting rotation, but Machado is worth spending big.

Neither China nor Canada has drawn a direct connection between the Meng case and the cases of the two other Canadians.

Many observers believe the detentions of the two Canadians were in response to Canada's arrest of Meng Wanzhou, the chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei.

Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland has formally demanded the "immediate release" of the two Canadians.

In December 2009, China executed convicted drug smuggler Akmal Shaikh of the United Kingdom for smuggling 4,030 grams of heroin. He has also not been allowed to apply for bail or see a lawyer. She has since been released on bail and remains under surveillance as she prepares to fight extradition to the US, which accuses her of fraud and lying to banks about business activities in Iran.

Trump Tweets: Defense Secretary Mattis to Retire in February
Mattis, along with other national security aides, was said to have opposed Trump's decision to remove US troops from Syria. It also quoted the secretary as saying that defense chiefs "don't always get to choose the president they work for".

"The competent Chinese authority will deal with it in accordance with the law", Hua said in answer to one question about McIver last week, in an English transcript posted to the ministry's website.
