Trump Tweets: Defense Secretary Mattis to Retire in February”

After Trump was elected, he was drawn to Mattis' reputation as a fierce battlefield commander and a nickname, Mad Dog, that Mattis apparently disliked.

Mattis is a decorated general from the US Marine Corps who has been praised by his colleagues in the Pentagon for the way he operated in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Mattis, along with other national security aides, was said to have opposed Trump's decision to remove US troops from Syria.

Trump said a replacement will be named "shortly".

Trump attacks Fed on eve of policy meeting
Powell himself could provide clarity in his news conference if he indicates where he thinks the "neutral rate" is. Similar cycles of rate increases previously have resulted in stock-market crashes or economic recessions.

In a stunning resignation letter, the 68-year-old military chief and three-time war veteran avowed his "core belief" lies in treating traditional USA allies with "respect" while "being clear-eyed" about authoritarian regimes such as Russian Federation and China. Mattis recognizes the president has a distinct foreign policy vision, and the president recognizes that Mattis has served this administration and his country nobly.

Mattis, pictured with Trump listending to the national anthem at an American football match, is seen as a stabilising force in the administration.

The retired Marine general, 68, had repeatedly moved to reassure allies unnerved by Trump's unpredictable pronouncements and argued successfully for continued US commitments in Syria, Afghanistan and other places where military leaders see an ongoing threat. "He sought to increase the Pentagon's "lethality" and tame its sprawling bureaucracy and associated costs, but the jury is still out on whether these efforts have made any real difference". But Mattis is smart enough to know that troop deployments are ultimately up to the president to decide, and that the defense secretary is but one member of the National Command Authority. "US security interests would be undermined by an enduring military presence in that country". "He was rebuffed, and told the president that he was resigning as a result", the Times reports. It also quoted the secretary as saying that defense chiefs "don't always get to choose the president they work for". One official added it was a contributing factor to his resignation. "While I generally enjoy reading fiction, this is a uniquely Washington brand of literature, and his anonymous sources do not lend credibility".

More recently, Trump disregarded Mattis' choice of Gen. David Goldfein, the Air Force chief, to be the next chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. "And I think that's the universal view of both [Secretary of State Mike] Pompeo and Mattis". "Everybody. People leave. That's Washington". It is a message to say, very clearly, that the United States faces a real risk right now from a President who governs off of his prejudices and impulses, and who is putting at risk some of the core principles that have successfully kept us at peace.

Martial suffered an apparent hamstring injury in the second half of United's 2-2 draw against Arsenal on Wednesday. Obviously there will be a lot of rotation, but everyone is there to play and show 100 per cent in each game.

Mattis was a defense secretary of few words in public.

He rarely gave formal news conferences or interviews.

Mattis recommended against pulling out of the Obama-era nuclear deal with Iran, for example, arguing that it was working to constrain Tehran's nuclear ambitions.

It was on Mattis's watch that the Pacific Command of the U.S. military was rechristened Indo-Pacific Command in a nod to growing ties with India and an acknowledgement of the increasing significance of India on the world stage and in America's world view, with China as a shared challenge.

Match-winner Origi emerged as a substitute in the 84th minute, replacing Roberto Firmino. Klopp, who admitted the goal was "a bit lucky", expressed his delight for Origi.

In August 2017, video surfaced of Mattis telling troops in Jordan that the U.S.
