Theresa May survives bid to topple her

Theresa May survives bid to topple her”

David Jeffery, a lecturer in British politics at the University of Liverpool who has studied the Conservative Party, said the vote of confidence in May could signal an acceptance among most of her MPs that her deal is the best they are going to get.

This means that when the prime minister makes another attempt to bring her Brexit Withdrawal Agreement to Parliament (she abandoned the previous attempt on Monday) she can do it without worrying that defeat will trigger a challenge to her leadership of the Conservative Party.

Solicitor-General Robert Buckland said May told lawmakers at a meeting that "it is not her intention to lead the party in the 2022 general election".

Amber Rudd, the Work and Pensions Secretary, has said the "Norway Plus" mode "seems plausible not just in terms of the country but in terms of where the MPs are".

Britain is scheduled to leave the European Union on March 29, so there is significant time pressure for progress.

Nell concedes the arithmetic to the deal passing through parliament remains challenging, however May's victory, "especially if combined with a protocol providing additional legal assurance on the temporary nature of the Irish backstop, could increase support for the Brexit deal in the vote promised by January 21".

She said she was not expecting a breakthrough on the backstop at the two-day summit.

The spill was called after 48 MPs filed letters of no confidence with a Conservative Party administrative committee, and after the Government postponed a critical vote on her Brexit agreement with Brussels. "But, on the face of it, Theresa May will still not have a majority for her Brexit deal and this is unlikely to make a lot of difference to that".

James Comey trashes Republicans after leaving House hearing
Comey had fought the congressional subpoena in court, pushing for a public hearing before settling for some concessions. Eventually Comey agreed to a closed-door hearing on the condition that a transcript be made public afterward.

Ms May early Thursday headed to Brussels for further negotiation on the Brexit deal. "I will support her through current events, but I can not vote for a motion that I believe will irrevocably weaken the United Kingdom for years to come".

"I am absolutely sure the prime minister will win", said Michael Gove, the most senior Brexiteer in May's government.

Theresa May defended her Brexit deal and warned that ousting her could derail the whole process.

To survive the challenge, May will need to secure the votes of a simple majority of 158 Tory MPs.

Paul Webb, professor of politics at the University of Sussex, said the vote reflects only what is happening inside the Conservative parliamentary party at the moment.

"This government is a farce, the Tory party is in chaos, the prime minister is a disgrace", Scottish National Party leader Ian Blackford said during a pugnacious Prime Minister's Questions session in the House of Commons.

We would be in the single market without having a say on the rules.

200 MPs backed May, while 117 voted against her.

The Oak Ridge Boys keep promise to sing at Bush funeral
Roberts said she believes Bush will be remembered for his role in the decline and eventual downfall of the Soviet Union. He served as the 41st president of America after he had previously served as Vice President alongside Ronald Regan.

But when May took it home, she ran into renewed opposition from hardline Brexiteers in her Conservative party and this week she baulked at putting it to a vote in parliament.

"So one of their first acts would have to be extending or rescinding Article 50, delaying or even stopping Brexit when people want us to get on with it", she said.

May said: "I've said that in my heart I would love to be able to lead the Conservative Party into the next general election but I think it is right that the party feels that they would prefer to go into that election with another leader".

Theresa May has played down the prospects of an "immediate breakthrough" on the so-called Northern Ireland backstop in talks with European Union leaders.

As it stands, the United Kingdom and the European Union are at a political impasse, and the current Brexit withdrawal agreement will not win approval in Parliament.

"My focus now is to get those assurances that we need to get this deal over the line because I genuinely believe it's in the best interests of both sides, of the United Kingdom and the EU", May said.

"She clearly doesn't have the confidence of the Commons".
