Democrats: President Trump’s illegal payments are ‘impeachable offense’ if proven”

In another filing, prosecutors for the special counsel investigating Russia's 2016 election interference said an unnamed Russian offered Mr. Cohen "government level" synergy between Russia and Mr. Trump's campaign in November 2015.

In legal filings Friday, the Justice Department stopped short of accusing President Trump of directly committing a crime.

Yet the most precarious legal situation for Trump appears to be separate from Mueller's inquiry: an assertion by federal prosecutors in NY that Trump directed his former lawyer, Michael Cohen, to make illegal payments during the campaign to silence women alleging extramarital affairs. But in a new memo arguing for a prison term for Mr. Cohen, prosecutors in Manhattan said he "acted in coordination and at the direction of" an unnamed individual, clearly referring to Mr. Trump.

However, there was no ambiguity in the court documents that prosecutors believe Cohen's actions were criminal and Trump was directly involved.

Cohen, had said that as the election neared, Mr. Trump directed payments to two women who claimed they had affairs with Mr. Trump.

This whole situation could just be a "weird anomaly" or a "crazy statistical quirk, and we may never see it again", he added. The Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program has shared images of the creatures in what looks like an uncomfortable predicament.

Schiff said Trump may end up needing to seek a pardon for himself from the next USA president.

Courts have never had to answer the question of whether presidents can pardon themselves.

Still, he questioned whether the efforts to silence the women "rise to the gravity" of formally ousting Trump from office. President Trump on Friday said he would nominate former Attorney General William Barr to the post.

The New York prosecutors said in their filing that Cohen should receive some credit for his cooperation with Mr Mueller.

Nadler said that these filings show that Trump "was at the center of a massive fraud, several massive frauds against the American people".

Facebook documents are seized by MPs investigating the security breach
Damian Collins, in charge of the hearing and committee, said in a Sunday tweet that he had reviewed the documents. Mr Collins told the Observer: "We are in uncharted territory".

Former Sen. John Edwards, who sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 2008, was indicted in 2011 in connection with payments made on his behalf by a wealthy campaign donor to keep Edwards' mistress quiet, which prosecutors argued amounted to illegal campaign contributions.

Republican Senator Marco Rubio told CNN he was waiting for the results of the Russian Federation investigation and related federal probes.

Trump's lawyers have said that special counsel Robert Mueller plans to adhere to that guidance, though Mueller's office has never independently confirmed that. "The president created his own swamp and brought it to the White House".

Legal experts have said the issue of whether Trump violated the law would come down to whether Trump tried to influence the election and whether he knew it was legally improper.

In June, Mr Giuliani told NBC's Meet the Press that while Mr Trump "probably does" have the power, pardoning himself would nevertheless "be unthinkable and probably lead to immediate impeachment". Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), who would be in charge of any impeachment hearings, made clear that if the allegations in the Michael Cohen sentencing memo are true, "They would be impeachable offenses".
