Canada's dilemma over Meng Wanzhou and Huawei

Canada's dilemma over Meng Wanzhou and Huawei”

On Thursday, authorities confirmed that a second Canadian national, businessman Michael Spavor, had been detained by Liaoning's provincial state security bureau.

US officials have briefed allies in recent months that Huawei is ultimately at the beck and call of the Chinese state, while also warning that its network equipment may contain "back doors" that open them up to cyber espionage.

Following Meng's December 1 arrest, which the USA ordered over allegations the executive committed financial fraud with the aim of skirting United States sanctions on sales to Iran, Chinese authorities seized the two Canadians this week for allegedly "endangering national security".

But after days of engaging with Chinese officials, Canada was finally granted access to diplomat on-leave Michael Kovrig.

It was reported widely on Friday that Canadian consular staff in China had been granted access to Kovrig in detention.

Theresa May survives bid to topple her
We would be in the single market without having a say on the rules. 200 MPs backed May, while 117 voted against her. Britain is scheduled to leave the European Union on March 29, so there is significant time pressure for progress.

Canadian officials are still pressing China for access to Canadian entrepreneur Michael Spavor, who is also being detained.

Canadian Tourism Minister Melanie Joly, meanwhile, shelved a trip to China next week to promote this country as a top destination for leisure travel. "Both governments agreed this would allow us to better achieve our shared objectives", the statement said.

"We look forward to meeting again to continue building people-to people ties and strengthening the tourism relationship between Canada and China - a relationship that creates good jobs for middle class families and opportunities for people in both countries", Ghio said.

The prime minister's comments on the Chinese arrests come as officials in Beijing vent frustration over Canada's role in the Huawei executive's case.

The arest comes after Meng Wanzhou, Huawei's chief finance officer was accused of violation of the U.S. sanctions imposed on Iran.

"The detention of two Canadian citizens is unacceptable, they ought to be returned", Pompeo said.

Pompeo spoke at a press conference in Washington with his Canadian counterpart Chrystia Freeland, Canadian Minister of Defence Harjit Sajjan and US Secretary of Defence James Mattis. She was released on $10-million bail on Tuesday after being detained on December 1 at the request of the United States.

Beijing warned Ottawa of severe consequences unless Meng is released.

Trudeau has explained Meng's arrest was part of an independent legal process, separate from politics.

US President Donald Trump blurred the line between political and judicial matters on Tuesday when he told Reuters he would consider intervening in Meng's case if the move would benefit ongoing trade negotiations between Washington and Beijing.

Earlier, many rumors suggested the possible release of the trailer in December. Captain Marvel is set to hit cinemas on March 8, 2019. The release of the two trailers has been swapped.
