Blame for the Marriott Hotel data breach pointed directly at China

Blame for the Marriott Hotel data breach pointed directly at China”

The stolen information could be used to discover "which Chinese citizens visited the same city, or hotel, as an American intelligence agent who was identified in data taken from the Office of Personnel Management or from American health insurers that document patients' medical histories and Social Security numbers". NPR has not independently confirmed the details provided by the papers' sources.

The Post's sources warned against making definitive conclusions on the attack, as the investigation was still ongoing, but said the methods of the hack suggested it was state-sponsored.

China has reportedly been trying to build a database containing USA government officials' personal information. And that the "discovery comes as the Trump administration is planning actions targeting China's trade, cyber and economic policies, perhaps within days".

GOP hit with election fraud claims after utilizing situation as rallying cry
But a lot has changed since then, especially as more information has come to light about the operative, McCrae Dowless . North Carolina Republicans and Democrats continue to fight over how to investigate the allegations of election fraud .

That's according to a US official briefed on the investigation, who spoke Wednesday to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity in order to discuss an ongoing investigation.

People involved in the company's private investigation into the breach also said the hackers may have been trying to collect information for China's spy agencies, rather than for financial gain, Reuters reported.

That suggests that Chinese hackers may have been behind a campaign created to collect information for use in Beijing's espionage efforts and not for financial gain, two of the sources said.

Beijing is now reeling over the arrest of Meng Wanzhou, the CFO of Chinese telecom giant Huawei and the daughter of the company's founder, over her alleged involvement in Iran sanction violations. The U.S. suspects Huawei of fraud involving violations of U.S. sanctions against Iran.

The hack exposed data from approximately 500 million Marriott and Starwood hotel customers.

As reported by NPR's Avie Schneider, "For 327 million of the affected guests, the compromised data includes some combination of name, mailing address, phone number, email address, passport number, Starwood Preferred Guest ("SPG") account information, date of birth, gender, arrival and departure information, reservation date, and communication preferences". On Tuesday she was granted bail in Canada while she awaits extradition to the U.S.
