The pro-government Yemeni forces on Sunday advanced in the Red Sea coastal city of Hodeidah controlled by the Shiite Houthi rebels after two days of intense battles, local sources said. He added that the adjoining Sanaa global airport was still open to air traffic from the United Nations and other relief agencies.

"The global community has a real opportunity to halt the senseless cycle of violence and to prevent an imminent catastrophe", Guterres said.

The Houthi-affiliated Masirah television station reported that more than 60 airstrikes were launched by the Saudi-led coalition against the Kilo16 area and other surrounding areas in Hodeidah during the past hours.

Later on Wednesday, Yemeni security and medical officials said an airstrike by a Saudi-led coalition killed five civilians and wounded eight more just south of Hodeida.

Following the collapse of the talks, which would have been the first of their kind in almost two years, the coalition announced it was relaunching an assault on Houthi-held Hodeidah, a strategically important Red Sea port city.

Saudi Arabia and its allies, including the UAE, entered the war in 2015 to suport Yemen's internationally recognised President Abdrabu Mansur Hadi after the Houthis took over Sanaa.
