Stan Lee, the mastermind behind Marvel Comics superheroes such as Spider-Man, the X-Men, and Thor, has died.

The news of Lee's passing has been met with an outpouring of grief. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he passed away in the early hours of Monday morning at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. He was 95 and had suffered several illnesses in recent years. Stan Lee is survived by his daughter.

Stan Lee, the man responsible for much of the Marvel Universe, has died.

The legendary editor and publisher, whose countless Marvel Comics creations spawned an entertainment empire, was born Stanley Martin Lieber in New York City in 1922. Lee was inducted into the comic book industry's Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1995. Most recently, Marvel's Spider-Man developed by Insomniac and published by Sony, was released to critical acclaim.

Marvel Comics issued its own statement as well, noting that "w$3 hen something mattered to Stan, you felt it in his words, whether in an editorial or in the stories themselves".

While giving us such wonderful characters and worlds, Lee was also a big believer in giving back. Stan Lee's childhood was marked by the Great Depression.

Lee rose through the ranks to become a comics writer, making millions of superhero fans dream of his fantastic universes and humans with extraordinary powers, and eventually led the Marvel empire for decades as its publisher.

Rest in peace, Stan Lee - he may be gone, but his legacy certainly won't be forgotten. "I'm standing in a bar with him and he's drinking this Asgardian drink, which is very powerful, and I ask for a sip and he says, 'No, it would kill you, ' and I insist".
