Pence, Xi Trade Barbs in Speeches at Pacific Summit

Pence, Xi Trade Barbs in Speeches at Pacific Summit”

Pence warned Saturday that USA sanctions and pressure on China would remain in place until Beijing reforms its trade practices.

FBI Director Christopher Wray said: "I would tell you that China in many ways represents the broadest, most complicated, most long-term counterintelligence threat we face. This is a short-sighted approach and it is doomed to failure", Xi told business leaders on the sidelines of the summit.

And the US Vice President has made the biggest announcement this year in terms of defense cooperation saying they will support Australia and Papua New Guinea build a naval base on Manus.

"We don't drown our partners in a sea of debt..."

The feisty exchanges laid the groundwork for what could be a fiery encounter between Xi and US President Donald Trump at next month's G20 summit in Argentina.

Ms Peters said the standoff between China and the USA in the Pacific is increasingly causing nearby countries to look at New Zealand "with fresh eyes" for leadership and representation. The US imposed tariffs on $200 billion of Chinese imports in September and has threatened to extend this to nearly all of China's exports to the US.

After his meeting with United States Vice President Mike Pence, Taiwan envoy Morris Chang (張忠謀) also met several other leaders at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Papua New Guinea Saturday.

"Inevitably, in the period ahead, we will be navigating a higher degree of US-China strategic competition", Morrison said in a speech where he navigated a careful line between the alliance with the US and engaging a more assertive China.

"We don't offer constricting belts or a one-way road", said Mr. Pence.

Xi lashed out at "America First" trade protectionism and said that global trade rules should not be applied "with double standards or selfish agendas" - a thinly veiled swipe at Washington.

Speaking at the Asia Pacific Economic Co-operation (Apec) summit in Papua New Guinea, the Malaysian prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, warned that globalisation was leaving some people behind and fuelling inequality.

In a major speech, Xi also stressed that there would be no winners from a trade war or a new cold war amid increasing rivalry between the world's top two economies.

China and the U.S. crossed swords Saturday, November 17, ahead of an APEC summit, dueling over protectionism, trade tariffs and "checkbook diplomacy" as they laid out sharply contrasting visions for the Pacific Rim region. "It is not an exclusive club closed to non-members, nor is it a trap as some people have labelled it".

It is no surprise that the United States decision apparently came on the heels of rumors that China might also emerge as the eventual developer of the deep-water base.

In his speech, Xi said the world needed to "draw upon each other's strengths and pursue coexistence", rather than criticize other countries' domestic choices. "It's not easy, but we have mastered it in a very short time", he said.

With concerns growing that rivalry between the U.S. and China could escalate, Mr Xi warned against going down that road. Protect your interest. Preserve your independence.
