Man killed by tribe on remote Indian island tried to 'declare Jesus'

Man killed by tribe on remote Indian island tried to 'declare Jesus'”

John Allen Chau, a 27 year old from Alabama, disembarked a small fishing boat on North Sentinel island, in India's Andaman and Nicobar islands, allegedly to convert the tribal people to Christianity. They are aggressive and are known to attack outsiders with arrows and stones. His body was later dragged with a rope and the islanders are also said to have buried him. They were scared and fled but returned next morning to find his body on the sea shore'.

Rough estimates have put the Sentinelese population at between 50 and 150, and they have their own language which is not spoken by any outsiders, and is unrelated to those on surrounding islands.

Once ashore, he tried to engage islanders but they became angry and fired an arrow at him, according to AP.

Following Chau's death, the fishermen left for Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, where they informed Chau's friend, who notified his family, Pathak said. They took him some of the way and he paddled the rest in a canoe.

"Words can not express the sadness we have experienced about this report", his family said in a statement posted on his Instagram account.

The Sentinelese people, PTI reports, survived the tsunami of 2004 without any help from the outside world.

Chau maintained a lively Instagram feed of his travels in Africa and other remote locales - including photos of leech and snake bites - and led missionary trips for youth from Oral Roberts University in Oklahoma, his alma mater, and others. While there, he worked with the university's missions and outreach department.

However, director general of police in Andaman and Nicobar, Dependra Pathak, told TNM: "He lived in Alabama, US".

He also won $600,000 in side bets from Woods, with the money earmarked for the Phil & Amy Mickelson Foundation. The final hole used the practice green for the tee box and course workers put in a new hole on the 18th green.

"John loved people, and he loved Jesus".

Mr Chau was a volunteer at a soccer development and social leadership program that Mr Prince founded, Ubuntu Football Academy. Photos posted on the organization's website show Chau meeting with a Holocaust survivor and visiting Jerusalem.

Chau's family posted a tribute on his Instagram and said they forgave those "reportedly responsible for his death". But he said Chau accepted the dangers that came with his adventures.

"This trip impacted my faith by opening my eyes to the complete reality of being where Jesus Christ actually had been when He was my age!" "I think I could be more useful alive though".

Alexander informed Bobby Parks, a friend of Chau in the U.S., who in turn informed his mother.

"He was an explorer at heart", Prince said. "He loved creation and being out in it, I think having probably found and connected with God that way, and deeply so".

India has a very hands-off approach to the island's people.

Mr Prince declined to discuss what Mr Chau had told him about his plans for traveling in India or the islands, saying he wanted to focus on his legacy. "The entire act of the deceased, as well as others, can be termed as a misdirected adventure into a restricted area to meet the uncontacted tribe who vigorously rejects any kind of external contact", said Pathak.

Today Global organizations like London-based "Survival International" campaign to protect the indigenous tribes living in the Andamans. Tourists have previously bribed local officials in a bid to spend time with them. The Indian island where a young American was killed last week has been cut off from the world for thousands of years, with islanders enforcing their own isolation.

According to NDTV, John was killed by a whirlwind of arrows shot towards him by the Sentinelese people on November 16.

While the world has moved on to technology, these hunters and gatherers have never practised agriculture.

In 2010, Indian Coast Guard officials arrested more than 100 Burmese fishermen within a short period for endangering the people.

It is a crime to attempt to make contact with the Sentinelese, and in 2017 Indian authorities outlawed taking photographs or making videos of the tribe as well.

Indian authorities make periodic checks on the tribe from boats anchored at a safe distance from shore.

Police are consulting anthropologists, tribal welfare experts and scholars to figure out a way to recover the body, he said.
