Finland baffled over Donald Trump raking comments during California wildfire visit

The president then recounted an alleged conversation with Finnish President Sauli Niinistö in which he was told about the benefits of raking. "And when they do, it's a very small problem".

Finns have been left bewildered by US President's Donald Trump's suggestion that California should copy Finland in raking forest floors to prevent future wildfires. "We are going to have to work quickly".

"Anybody needs their floors raked?" tweeted National Basketball Association team Chicago Bulls' Finnish star Lauri Markkanen with a picture of him holding a rake. Trump promised federal funds and says he has some ideas.

Trump went on to explain that the president of Finland, whom he met on an overseas trip a week earlier, told him about raking the forest floors.

In fact, he says that if Finland does face the prospect of greater forest fires in the coming years, climate change will be a good reason why.

At least 77 people have been killed by the wildfires that have spread through Northern California, and hundreds of others are missing. "And they're raking them - they're on fire", Trump said.

As hundreds of searchers continued to sift through rubble in the town of Paradise looking for the dead yesterday, almost 1,300 people remain unaccounted for more than a week after the fire sparked in Butte County.

Asked on Saturday whether he thought climate change had a role in the fires, he said "you have a lot of factors".

"The fire was right over there and they were raking trees, little trees like this, nut trees, little bushes that you could see were totally dry, weeds".

As California comes to terms with the deadliest wildfires in its history, US President Donald Trump has offered a solution to the problem.

Seemingly placing the blame once more he insensitively said about seeing firefighters clearing dried brush: 'This should have been all raked out'.

Ah yes, raking leaves!

The US leader's comment generated amusement on social media in Finland, which manages its vast forests with scientific seriousness.

Yana Valachovic, a forest adviser with the University of California, told the Washington Post that managing forests would actually reduce the severity of the blazes.

"The continuously falling needles and twigs, when they decay, return important nutrients back to the forest trees", he writes.
