Donald Trump Vows Tent Cities To End Migrants' Catch-and-Release

Donald Trump Vows Tent Cities To End Migrants' Catch-and-Release”

President Donald Trump on Thursday said he would order border agents to refuse to consider the asylum claims of people apprehended while crossing the border between ports of entry - though immigration lawyers asserted the move runs afoul of US and global law.

Earlier this week President Trump ordered 5800 US troops to the border to assist Customs and Border protection.

Mexican authorities haven't directly targeted the main caravan of about 4,000 migrants, and activists aiding that group said they were shifting their route toward the Gulf coast, a path closer to the Texas border.

Several caravans of migrants from Central America are slowly winding north. "We will consider that the maximum we can consider that, because they're throwing rocks viciously and violently".

"Migrants seeking asylum will have to present themselves lawfully at a port of entry", Trump said.

He also has introduced the issue of ending birthright citizenship through an executive order, a method Speaker Paul Ryan and others have criticized given forceful language in the 14th Amendment.

During his remarks, President Trump slammed Democrats for "stupid laws" he argues enable drug trafficking, human smuggling, violent activity and illegal immigration.

Trump reiterated that he wanted to set up "tent cities" to hold people coming to the USA, including those seeking asylum. The U.S. also doesn't have space at the border to manage the large-scale detention of migrants, with most facilities at capacity.

But in recent days, officials from Mexico's immigrant protection agency have organized rides for straggling women and children as a humanitarian effort.

Why Chelsea's generosity to Frank Lampard may come back to haunt them
Lampard added: "I'm proud of them". "It wasn't easy for Mason Mount to come here against his parent club", continued Redknapp. Fabregas scored four minutes before half-time. "There wasn't a tear in the eye, but it was emotional", Lampard said.

A US official says the first 100 or so active-duty troops have arrived at the U.S.

In recent days, he has sought to present as a threat to the United States a large group of migrants from Central America who have left poverty and violence at home and are heading slowly through Mexico toward the US border.

The troops are doing initial assessments at the port of entry in McAllen, Texas. Earlier in the week, the administration said it would send thousands of troops to the border; on Thursday, Trump said these troops could treat migrants who throw rocks as if they were using firearms.

Critics said the speech seemed mostly created to scare, with no specifics on what mechanisms Trump meant to use to push through his desired changes.

Trump said Thursday that, under his order, any migrants who do manage to enter the country illegally will be housed in "massive tent cities" he plans to build while their cases are processed.

That's according to three people familiar with the plans who spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday on the condition of anonymity because they weren't authorized to speak publicly. At any rate, they are not expected to be in positions where anyone trying to storm across the border would quickly come in contact with them.

He has ramped up the rhetoric daily ahead of next Tuesday's midterm congressional elections, accusing the opposition Democrats of wanting to throw open the borders to floods of "tough people", "rapists" and other types of threats.

Trump referenced clashes between armed police and caravan participants at Mexico's border with Guatemala.

The video includes scenes of migrants moving toward the US and asks ominously, "Who else would Democrats let in?" "We will hold them".

Trump said families will remain together in tents and other structures that the Army Corps of Engineers is now putting together while their asylum cases play out.

A second, smaller group of 1,000 or so migrants is more than 200 miles behind the first caravan.

But troop estimates have been changing at a dizzying pace.

Last week officials indicated 800 to 1,000 troops might be sent.

As part of the dramatically-named Operation Faithful Patriot, over 5,000 fully armed soldiers are now being deployed to help some 2,000 National Guardsmen secure the 26 entry points along the 2,000-mile land border with Mexico.
