Trump appears to threaten USMCA deal when lashing out at migrant caravan”

The Honduran migrants, trekking in a caravan toward Mexico's southern border, say they're headed for the United States in an effort to flee violence and search for economic opportunity.

Images like this caught Trump's eye Thursday morning, and he started leveling a slew of threats - including cutting off aid to Central American countries and demanding Mexico intervene.

U.S. President Donald Trump threatened Thursday to send the military to close its southern border if Mexico fails to stem the "onslaught" of migrants from Central America, in a series of tweets that blamed Democrats ahead of the midterm elections.

"I will call up the U.S. Military and CLOSE OUR SOUTHERN BORDER!" the president threatened, if Mexico does not heed his request to stop what he termed an "onslaught" of people crossing the border into the U.S.

He also threatened to mobilize the USA military and shut down the southern border to stop those migrants from entering the US, reports CBS News correspondent Chip Reid. "All Democrats fault for weak laws!" In April, he said in a meeting with foreign leaders that the U.S.is "going to be guarding our border with our military".

Typically, when a person manages to sneak into the United States through Mexico - regardless of whether they were from Mexico or some point farther south - they're detained and housed in the United States until their case is decided.

He added: "We hope decent people will denounce these comments and tht the president will see fit to apologise for them". Days after the writer #Khashoggi was murdered, he praises a congressman who physically attacked a reporter.

Guatemala has closed its border gate and is standing guard with dozens of troops and two armored jeeps. Numerous migrants may chose to stay in countries along the route, though the Mexican government is already preparing a response.

It's important to remember that for Mexico, migration isn't just about people coming into the country, Salazar says.

"We welcome the government of Mexico's statement that they will seek cooperation with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to address immigration issues in the region, including the influx of people arriving in Mexico", Pompeo said in a statement.

The group has been dubbed the "march of the migrants".

According to the State Department, Pompeo's visit Friday will focus on the USMCA, immigration and the transition from the Peña Nieto administration to the incoming Andrés Manuel López Obrador administration.

Frustrated by Congress' failure to fully fund his proposed wall, Trump in April ordered National Guard personnel to help secure the border in four southwestern US states.

"And we need to call it what it is", Gutierrez said.

On Tuesday, Honduras' president accused unnamed "political groups" of organizing the caravan based on lies in order to cause problems in Honduras.

Mexican officials will have to decide how to handle the migrants who continue traveling by foot and in vehicles toward the southern border, a journey that could take weeks.

He has urged the Republicans to make immigration a central issue of important Congressional elections which take place in the USA next month.

The first to arrive to the border with Mexico took buses or hitchhiked. "But it becomes much harder when President Trump makes this a political issue in which he bashes Mexico".
