NAFTA talks run up against deadline; U.S. tariffs remain tough issue”

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said it makes no sense to sign onto a new NAFTA only to be hit by new tariffs and is seeking safeguards.

The U.S, Mexico and Canada have been negotiating for 13 months to modernize the three-country North American Free Trade Agreement, which dates to 1994. "We don't like their representative very much".

The official declined to be named because the matter has not yet been made public.

Ujczo said while Canada would rather have tariff protection spelled out when the deal is announced, he expects that as a compromise, all three countries will say they plan to meet again in the near future to hammer out the details of a detente on the tariff threat.

Canada, the United States' No. 2 trading partner, was left out when the USA and Mexico reached an agreement last month to revamp the North American Free Trade Agreement.

"We're very unhappy with the negotiations and the negotiating style of Canada", Trump said.

Associated Press writers Kevin Freking, Mary Clare Jalonick, Padmananda Rama, Matthew Daly, Julie Pace and AP photographers J. Kavanaugh replied that he doesn't even know Swetnick and that her accusations are "from the Twilight Zone".

In August, Trump said that the United States and Mexico had reached an agreement in their NAFTA talks.

Including Canada, U.S. companies' top export market, is considered essential to making a political and economic success of any new North American trade deal. Peter Navarro, director of the National Trade Council at the White House, said during an interview with FOX Business' Neil Cavuto that the current bilateral deal with Mexico will go forward in text form to Congress Sunday at midnight.

But trade attorney Daniel Ujczo of the Dickinson Wright law firm, who follows the NAFTA talks closely, said the United States put pressure on Canada, saying there would "consequences" if it didn't reach an agreement by the end of the day Sunday. "The Americans are finding that the negotiations are tough because Canadians are tough negotiators, as we should be", Trudeau told reporters on the way into a regular weekly cabinet meeting in Ottawa.

Canada is the second-biggest trading partner of the USA, and Mexico is the third.

The U.S. exported more goods to Canada previous year than to China, Japan and Germany combined.

The Canadians were "very badly treated" the United States in commercial matters, complained Wednesday to the u.s. president Donald Trump at a press conference on the sidelines of the Un general Assembly in NY.

"I don't think we've completely missed the deadline", said Dan Ujczo, a trade attorney at Dickinson Wright.

"That means the negotiations aren't over yet", he said.

Those rules require that a certain percentage of an imported vehicle's components be manufactured in the United States.

"It's a challenging task to figure that out and they're spending a lot of time on that right now", said the third Canadian source.

"Canada wants some assurances going forward that the president will not continue to use this, after we sign an agreement, to harass our industries simply because he's mad at our prime minister", the president of the Canadian Labour Congress told BNN Bloomberg television Thursday.

The release of the trade deal text starts a months-long process for US congressional approval that will require a lengthy analysis by the independent USA global Trade Commission and notification periods before an up-or-down vote.
