Google is Shutting Down Google+, Admits Low Consumer Adoption”

The company announced on its blog on Monday that data from up to 500,000 users may have been exposed to external developers by a bug that was present for more than two years in its systems.

The API flaw allowed third-party app developers to access profile and contact information that chose to sign into the apps via Google.

When the company's technical staff discovered the bug in March, they decided against disclosing the issue to users because they hadn't found anyone that had been affected, the company said in a blog post.

Meanwhile, Google said the flaw was an unexploited API bug discovered and fixed internally before anyone externally found it - and in any case, it's shuttering Google+ because netizens don't use it. Businesses will still be able to use the service as an internal chat channel, though.

Kavanaugh gets the votes to survive Supreme Court fight
Murkowski sat solemnly during the roll call and whispered "No" when it was her turn to vote. But he says in a statement he is casting his vote on "what is best for West Virginia".

The bug was discovered in March of 2018, but was presumed to have been open since sometime in 2015. The service, Smith said, failed both in consumer adoption and engagement with apps: "90 percent of Google+ user sessions are less than five seconds". "As part of its response to the incident, the Alphabet Inc. unit plans to announce a sweeping set of data privacy measures that include permanently shutting down all consumer functionality of Google+".

A Google spokesperson cited "significant challenges in creating and maintaining a successful Google+ that meets consumers' expectations" along with "very low usage" as the reasons for the move.

The leaked memo says that while there is no evidence that outside developers misused any data, there is still no way to know for sure.

"We are shutting down Google+ for consumers", Smith added, admitting that the product was, at best, underwhelming.

Trump says Republicans should have pushed through Kavanaugh sooner
She said that Kavanaugh's declaration of "innocence" and lack of sexual inactivity in high school on Fox News is a lie. Ford and Kavanaugh are set to testify before the Senate Judiciary Committee on her allegation on Thursday.

Some of that qualifies as legally protected personally identifiable information, and its exposure could trigger scrutiny from federal and state regulators, including some who have probed Google before on similar issues.

The security breach was a bug that potentially gave developers access to personal profile information of more than half a million user accounts, though Google said it sound no evidence that any developers had abused the bug.

Given the potential for abuse, and the fact that nearly no one is using Google+, Alphabet opted to take the path of least resistance and yank the doddering network off life support.

More information will be available over the coming months, including ways that users can download and migrate their data. If you go and check out some of the Google+ engineers on the platform, that have been working on Google+, they are either no longer with Google, or haven't posted to Google+ in many months - some are years.
