China condemns US for South China Sea freedom of navigation operation

China condemns US for South China Sea freedom of navigation operation”

Chinese vessels have approached U.S. Navy ships during previous FONOPs in the South China Sea, but Sunday's encounter appears to the be the closest one yet. Such operations need to be within 12 nautical miles of an island or territory to constitute a challenge under global law.

The Chinese defence ministry says it opposes the USA warship's entry into the waters "around China's islands and reefs".

"The US has repeatedly sent warships into the territorial waters near Chinese reefs and islands in the South China Sea", it said.

When the Chinese destroyer had reached a distance 45 yards of the Decatur's bow, the USA destroyer was forced to take evasive action to avoid collision.

The Chinese ship conducted "increasingly aggressive maneuvers", that brought it "within 45 yards of Decatur's bow, after which Decatur maneuvered to prevent a collision,"U.S". "The U.S. ship was identified and verified according to the law, and warned it and drove it away".

The Pentagon defended the action Sunday as part of its freedom of navigation missions, which are meant to enforce the right of free passage for US vessels in worldwide waters as "routine" operations.

Amazon Raises Minimum Wage for U.S. Workers to $15 Per Hour
The move comes amid a national push from the labor-backed Fight for $15 movement to raise the minimum wage nationwide. For example, if an employee draws $US100 from food stamps , that person's employer would be taxed the same amount.

As we reported last week, US Air Force B-52 heavy long-range bombers flew through both the East and South China Sea.

"China's military is resolutely opposed to this", it said.

US warships often maneuver in close formation, but their movements are closely coordinated, following standardized and procedures and principles, and the maneuvering ships rarely have less than 1,000 yards between them.

China frequently challenges US ships and aircraft passing through parts of the South China Sea, sometimes with radio warnings, but at other times by using harassing maneuvers.

There was no immediate reaction from China, but a similar U.S. operation in July, involving the disputed Paracel islands, prompted a furious Beijing to deploy military vessels and fighter jets.

The unsafe and aggressive manoeuvres by the U.S. and Chinese ships took place amid the trade war between the world's two largest economies.

On Monday, a United States defense official said that security talks due to take place later this month in Beijing between Defense Secretary Jim Mattis and his Chinese counterpart had been canceled.

The recent showdown between the Chinese military and a United States warship follows a similar incident involving a British warship. Since then, China has engaged in numerous unsafe incidents against us surveillance planes, while generally downplaying the danger they posed afterwards.

"They do not want me or us to win because I am the first president ever to challenge China on trade".

Beijing last month refused a USA warship entry to Hong Kong, and its top naval officer canceled a high-level meeting with his US counterpart.
