Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court Nomination Heads To Key Senate Vote

Brett Kavanaugh's Supreme Court Nomination Heads To Key Senate Vote”

Senators including Collins have been swamped by reporters and protesters in the runup to the Kavanaugh confirmation votes.

WASHINGTON ― The Senate held a procedural vote on Friday that puts Brett Kavanaugh one step closer to being confirmed to the Supreme Court. Exactly one month from elections in which House and Senate control are in play, Democrats tried making sure that female voters were paying attention.

Sen. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., who's repeatedly battled Trump and will retire in January, said he'd vote for Kavanaugh's confirmation "unless something big changes".

The 2008 vice presidential nominee said she would not seek the Republican nomination for the White House by entering what is already a crowded field.

UNITED STATES- SEPTEMBER 27 Sen. Lindsey Graham R-S.C. points at the Democrats as he defends Judge Brett Kavanaugh during the Senate Judiciary Committee hearing on his nomination be an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States focus

It ended with this line: "The Supplemental Background Investigation confirms what the Senate Judiciary Committee concluded after its investigation: there is no corroboration of the allegations made by Dr. [Christine Blasey Ford] Ford or Ms. [Deborah] Ramirez".

Tensions have been high at the Capitol with opponents of Kavanaugh, including survivors of sexual assault, confronting senators in the halls and holding vigil across the street at the Supreme Court.

Mr Trump responded to the Senate decision with a Tweet which said: "Very proud of the US Senate for voting "YES" to advance the nomination of Judge Brett Kavanaugh!".

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., arrives at the Capitol in Washington, Friday, Oct. 4, 2018, before the final push to confirm Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. The cloture vote at 7:30 AM PT/10:30 AM ET will determine whether the Senate will end debate on Kavanaugh's nomination.

Amazon Raises Minimum Wage for U.S. Workers to $15 Per Hour
The move comes amid a national push from the labor-backed Fight for $15 movement to raise the minimum wage nationwide. For example, if an employee draws $US100 from food stamps , that person's employer would be taxed the same amount.

"This has truly been the most hard evaluation of a decision that I've ever had to make and I've made some interesting ones in my political career".

The National Council of Churches, former Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, and over 1,000 law professors have publicly spoken out against his confirmation. Steve Daines (R-Mont.) announced Thursday he plans to be at his daughter's wedding back home on Saturday.

Lawmakers might vote differently on the climactic confirmation roll call, and Collins told reporters that she wouldn't rule out doing so. He was slated to fly to NY for three fundraisers.

Kavanaugh's expected two-vote victory in itself underscored how unusually divisive his nomination fight has been. Republicans have enough votes to meet that bar on their own, but only if they win the support of Sens.

White House not micromanaging Kavanaugh probe
Kavanaugh and Ford appeared before the Senate Judiciary Committee last week, where they answered questions about the allegations. The allegations are far from the first to accuse the judge of being a hard partier prone to aggressive behavior when drunk.

The titanic battle to fill in the vacant ninth seat on the apex court now tied 4-4 between conservative and liberal justices hewed closely along party lines in a Senate where Republicans hold a slender 51-49 majority- except for cross-voting by two lawmakers, one from each side.

Flake forced Republicans to launch the additional investigation last week after a tense negotiation with Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats. Joe Manchin, who caught colleagues off guard when he voted with Republicans to cut off debate on Kavanaugh. "I said a few things I should not have said", he wrote in an op-ed published Thursday evening.

Kavanaugh's nomination was embroiled in a controversy that gripped the nation after multiple women made sexual assault allegations originating from his time in high school and college.

Among those interviewed were Mark Judge, PJ Smyth, and Leland Keyser, the three other teens that Christine Blasey Ford said were at a house party where she alleged that a drunken Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982.

ABC boss Michelle Guthrie ousted from role as managing director
Faine, who has been with the ABC since 1989, also said he had confronted Ms Guthrie about why she was not the staff's "champion". Guthrie, a lawyer who ran Star TV in Hong Kong and then worked at Google , came to the ABC in May 2016 to replace Mark Scott.

Several recent polls show that Republican enthusiasm about voting, which had lagged behind Democrats, jumped after a contentious Senate Judiciary Committee hearing last week. But she said the Federal Bureau of Investigation had found no corroborating evidence from witnesses whose names Ford had provided. They also sought to paint him as a justice that would swing the court deeply to the right.
