A massive explosion of a natural gas pipeline near Prince George, British Columbia has led utilities from Canada to southern OR to ask customers to reduce their gas consumption to try to avoid potential loss of service.

A natural gas line disruption in northern BC means that some UBC buildings may be without heating, hot water or fuel for cooking appliances.

FortisBC, the company that depends on the Enbridge line for about 85 per cent of the gas it delivers to its one million customers, said in an online notice that gas is now flowing, but customers are still asked to cut back.

FortisBC warns all of its consumers to limit their natural gas usage following an explosion on the Enbridge gas pipeline near Prince George yesterday at approximately 5:45 p.m.

The cause of the rupture is still under review by six investigators from the National Energy Board, but Enbridge could not say how long that review would take.

Here in the lower mainland, FortisBC reminds customers that if you smell gas, you need to leave the area and call the FortisBC 24-hour natural gas emergency line at 1-800-663-9911 or 911.
