Trump to withhold 100,000 pages of Kavanaugh’s White House records

Trump to withhold 100,000 pages of Kavanaugh’s White House records”

President Donald Trump's Supreme Court nominee, federal Judge Brett Kavanaugh, can expect tough questions on a range of issues when his Senate confirmation hearings begin Tuesday, including his stance on abortion, gay rights and presidential power.

While Kavanaugh has upheld precedent during his time as a judge, it is uncertain if that will change if he is confirmed as a Supreme Court justice.

With his decades of work as a Washington power player - as a Bush lawyer, White House Staff Secretary, and then Appeals Court judge - Kavanaugh sports an extensive paper trail, a history Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell anxious about before President Trump nominated him.

Trump Says Jeff Sessions' Job Is Safe, Until November Anyway
I think that is when, you know, there will be from the progression in this crisis that it will occur, ' he said. Just last week, the president said Sessions never took control of the Justice Department.

Schumer, New York Democrat, even accused former President George W. Bush of complicity, saying he used his powers to block access to tens of thousands of pages of records from Judge Kavanaugh's time in the Bush White House.

"The White House, after consultation with the Department of Justice, has directed that we not provide these documents for this reason", it said. Rather than wait on the National Archives to produce the millions of documents relating to Kavanaugh's record, Republicans have relied on a group of lawyers for Bush to review documents ― a parallel and partisan effort that a National Archives official has described as "something that has never happened before".

Schumer called the "last moment" decision by President Trump "unprecedented in the history of [Supreme Court nominations]" and said it had "all the makings of a cover up". The major portion of the documents withheld for privilege "reflect deliberations and candid advice concerning the selection and nomination of judicial candidates, the confidentiality of which is critical to any president's ability to carry out this core constitutional executive function".

"I think today is for not happy with the result, but the next matches to prepare well". However, the 27-year-old was more evasive over what may happen further down the line.

Sen. Dick Durbin of IL, the second-ranking Democrat in the Senate and also a member of the Judiciary Committee, said on "FOX News Sunday" that they'd be lucky to see six percent of all the documents out there. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota, raised concerns over more than 140,000 pages of material that have been made available to senators but not to the public.

However, many liberal lawmakers and activists have spoken out against Kavanaugh because of his beliefs on civil suits against presidents and the fact that his presence will make the court solidly conservative.

"I think it's much more powerful if we go in there and ask the questions".

Turkey is calling for the U.S.to extradite a Pennsylvania-based Muslim cleric accused engineering a 2016 coup attempt. Turkey's battered lira weakened 5 percent after a court rejected Andrew Brunson's appeal for release.
