Tropical Storm Gordon brings hurricane warning to Gulf Coast

Tropical Storm Gordon brings hurricane warning to Gulf Coast”

Residents in parts of South Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana are being warned to prepare for tropical storm-force winds with the onset of Tropical Storm Gordon.

Rain bands and gusty winds from Tropical Storm Gordon swept across South Florida on Monday morning and the biggest impact appeared to be power outages.

Geo Rodriguez made a decision to go for a walk on Hollywood Beach, north of Miami, on Monday morning and got caught in the storm. Gordon is moving very quickly to the west-northwest at 17 miles per hour and on the current forecast track, it is likely to make landfall either late Tuesday or very early Wednesday morning as a category 1 hurricane along the northern Gulf Coast. The center of the storm was located about 60 miles west-northwest of Key Largo, Florida. This is where a tropical storm warning and a flash flood watch will be in effect through Wednesday.

Wind gusts of 48 mph were recorded in Fort Lauderdale, 49 mph in Pembroke Pines, and 51 mph in Opa-locka.

Gordon was expected to strengthen in the Gulf.

The storm may gain strength as it crosses the warm waters in the Gulf, Stewart said.

A hurricane watch was issued for the Gulf Coast from the mouth of the Pearl River to the Alabama-Florida border.

A tropical storm warning and a storm surge watch are in effect for Harrison, Hancock and Jackson counties and parishes in southeast Louisiana, according to the National Weather Service in New Orleans. These locations can expect a surge of 3-5 feet as the storm moves ashore late Tuesday into Wednesday. As much as 8 inches (20 centimeters) of rain could fall in some parts of the Gulf states through late Thursday. A storm surge warning has been issued for the area stretching from Shell Beach, Louisiana, to Dauphin Island, Alabama. Isolated tornadoes are possible. After moving northwest, the next landfall for Gordon will likely be somewhere in southeastern Louisiana or southern Mississippi.

The storm was moving west-northwest at 17 miles per hour (28 kph).
