Damage by Hurricane Florence might be worse because of climate change

Damage by Hurricane Florence might be worse because of climate change”

The latest forecast advisories show the 130 miles per hour storm making landfall early Friday in the Carolinas as a major hurricane but then taking a turn toward the southwest.

Hurricane Florence will be "the storm of a lifetime", according to the National Weather Service.

New projections indicate the now-Category 3 hurricane will move slightly southeast, with landfall expected between Wilmington and Morehead City, North Carolina.

Florence, one of the strongest storms on the Eastern Seaboard in decades, is a strong Category 2 hurricane with winds of 110 miles per hour.

The slow movement, combined with the massive amount of moisture this storm holds, will bring unsafe rains - from 20 to 30 inches in coastal North Carolina, with 40 inches possible in isolated areas, the weather service says.

In Wilmington, resident Michael Wilson fortified his home against the wind and rain, and anxious. "In this case, the coastline north of the center could experience storm surge during at least two 12-hour tidal cycles, rather than just one, and at least some surge could spread southwest with Florence", Henson wrote.

Rafael Nadal , of Spain, celebrates after defeating Dominic Thiem , of Austria, during the quarterfinals of the U.S. Novak Djokovic , of Serbia, returns a shot to Kei Nishikori , of Japan, during the semifinals of the U.S.

Florence is the most risky of three tropical systems in the Atlantic.

More than 1 million people are under mandatory evacuations in the Carolinas and Virginia, and about 30 million across the Southeast will be affected if the forecast holds, CNN meteorologist Michael Guy said.

Tim Terman's house in Southport, North Carolina, is about 20 feet above sea level.

"I'm not approaching Florence from fear or panic", said Brad Corpening, 35, who planned to ride out the storm in his boarded-up delicatessen in Wilmington.

Downpours and flooding would be especially severe, lasting for days, if the storm stalls over land.

Emergency preparations included activating more than 2,700 National Guard troops, stockpiling food, setting up shelters, switching traffic patterns so major roads led away from shore, and securing 16 nuclear power reactors in the Carolinas and Virginia.

Nishikori leads head to head meetings 8-6, he won the last match played at 2018 Monte Carlo semifinals in three sets. Osaka broke in the second and sixth games of the opening set which was wrapped up in just 24 minutes.

"This one really scares me", National Hurricane Center Director Ken Graham said.

"We have not been asked to take evacuees yet and will evaluate our capability at the time of the request", Ralston said.

"Our sand dunes are healthy but they're not going to be able to keep back a wall of water like that", he said.

"A storm with the track of Florence is unprecedented". But most people are more concerned about wind damage than storm surge, Baker said. Cars and trucks full of people and belongings streamed inland. All lanes of Interstate 26 are westbound to allow more people to leave the coast and head inland toward the state capital of Columbia. "Get prepared on the East Coast, this is a no-kidding nightmare coming for you", Gerst writes.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency warned that storm surge watches and warnings are in effect for the entire North Carolina coast and parts of SC.

"I think Puerto Rico was incredibly successful", Trump said Tuesday, adding that he thought the storms that hit the island were "probably the hardest" thus far due to "the island nature".
