Venezuelan President Unharmed After Assassination Attempt By Explosive Drones”

Maduro said that as he was mid-speech in an event to commemorate the 81st anniversary of the Bolivarian National Guard, a device exploded right in front of him.

Maduro was standing next to his wife Cilia Flores and several high ranking military officials for the event broadcast on radio and television.

Video from NTN24 TV channel shows Mr Maduro looking upwards, startled, during his speech.

The "amateurish" attack prompted embarrassing images of Maduro cut off mid-sentence with droves of soldiers running away in fear, making the president appear vulnerable, Smilde noted.

Venezuela's president Nicolas Maduro has claimed he survived an assassination attempt involving exploding drones.

Moment of truth for Thomas as brutal stage awaits
The farmers' protest occurred 30 kilometres into the 218-kilometre (135.5-mile) leg from Carcassonne to Bagneres-de-Luchon. The events of stage 16 did highlight again, though, just how vulnerable the riders are.

Miguel Perez Abad, president of the Venezuelan government banks, tweeted "In a few moments, our national government will inform about what happened at Bolivar Avenue".

Firefighters near the scene have disputed Mr Rodriguez's version of events. Several flying objects, like drones, containing explosives were detonated close to the presidential platform and in some locations along the parade.

While the Colombian authorities termed the allegations "absurd", a senior US State Department official said they are "carefully following the situation".

"That drone was coming for me but there was a shield of love", Maduro said. Maduro accused current Colombian President Santos of being behind the assassination attack with others involved.

Communications Minister Jorge Rodriguez says Maduro was not harmed.

Seven people were injured in the apparent attack.

During the incident, Maduro was speaking about Venezuela's economy in an address when audio of the live television coverage was suddenly cut off.

Hundreds of thousands of Venezuelans have fled due to food and medicine shortages and hyperinflation that could reach one million percent this year, according to the International Monetary Fund.

Maduro often accuses the opposition and the United States of working together to foment a "coup" to topple him.

Maduro, who escaped unhurt in the incident, said "everything points" to a right-wing plot against him and also claimed arrests have been made in the case.
