The sports world reacts to Senator John McCain's death”

McCain said the state had been forced to take action given the federal government's inability to control the border. "One of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory", McCain tweeted. As one of the "Keating Five", McCain was cited by the Senate Ethics Committee for "poor judgment".

He died on Saturday at his Arizona home surrounded by his family at the age of 81.

McConnell announced McCain's death to a few hundred people at the Republican Party of Kentucky's annual Lincoln Dinner on Saturday night in Lexington.

Former President Bill Clinton, President Donald Trump, Vice President Mike Pence, and Bernie Sanders were among the many political figures who paid respect to the political maverick.

"John McCain was a man of honor, a true patriot in the best sense of the word". But we shared, for all our differences, a fidelity to something higher-the ideals for which generations of Americans and immigrants alike have fought, marched, and sacrificed. We saw this country as a place where anything is possible - and citizenship as our patriotic obligation to ensure it forever remains that way.

"I am able to celebrate a wonderful life and I will be grateful for additional time that I have", the senator said at the time.

McCain had been a rare and outspoken Republican critic of Trump, accusing him of "naivete", "egotism" and of sympathising with autocrats. He continued to issue statements and tweets, published a valedictory book and took part in an HBO documentary that some likened to starring in his own obituary. The loss of Senator McCain will be felt deeply throughout the Senate and the country - where countless Americans have benefited from his service.

McCain has not been in Washington since December, leaving a vacuum in the corridors of the Senate and the television news studios he roamed for decades. His dogged patriotism and passion for country made him an inspiration, and a model, for all of us.

"All that I am is thanks to him".

President Trump phoned McCain's wife to offer his sympathies, but his call came after months of bitterness between the two politicians. John McCain following the senator's death. "He's not a war hero", Trump said at an event in Iowa. "Our hearts and prayers are with you!"

Trump, who received serial deferments and did not serve in the military, said that McCain was "a war hero (only) because he was captured", adding, "I like people that weren't captured".

Years later, as McCain reflected on this period, he said he held no ill will toward his captors. By the mid-1960s, the Vietnam War was raging and McCain's squadron was drawn into battle.
