Despite tensions, Russia seeks U.S. help to rebuild Syria”

Iranian forces have withdrawn their heavy weapons in Syria to a distance of 85 km from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, TASS quoted a Russian envoy as saying on Wednesday, but Israel deemed the pullback inadequate.

The incident took place on the southern Golan Heights, near the triangle of Syria, Jordan and Israel borders.

However, numerous other reports differed: Three missiles and one unmanned aerial vehicle (drone) were allegedly shot down by Syrian air defenses, according to Syrian activist Wael al-Russia, Sputnik reported.

Israel has vowed not to let Iran establish a military presence in Syria.

In Moscow, the Russian Defence Ministry said its deployment of military police on the Syrian-held Golan was aimed at supporting a decades-old United Nations peacekeeper presence (see story on page 4).

During their summit in Helsinki, Russian President Vladimir Putin and President Donald Trump said they were exploring ways to protect Israel from the war in Syria.

Carr Fire: Park employees save 50 vulnerable animals by taking them home
A wildfire in rural Shasta County in Northern California tripled in size overnight, and more evacuations have been ordered. There are more than 1,700 firefighters working to control the flames, of which only six percent are contained so far.

Israel has sought to remain out of direct involvement in Syria's civil war, but it admits carrying out dozens of air strikes there to stop what it says are deliveries of advanced weaponry to its Lebanese enemy Hezbollah. "We will not let Iran use Syria as a base to attack us from".

At the same time, Israeli authorities described the Syrian civil war as effectively over on Thursday and predicted that the Golan Heights frontier between the countries would be quieter with central rule by Damascus restored. An initial assessment by Israel's military identified the gunmen as Islamic State militants, in what would mark a rare attempt by the Islamist militants to infiltrate Israel. Gen. Nitzan Nuriel, former head of the Counterterror Bureau at Israel's Prime Minister's office, said Israel should be on alert in the area because Syrian government troops "from now and a year from now, they will not be able to control those who are trying to attack the State of Israel from that border". Jonathan Conricus, said in a telephone briefing with reporters that he could not immediately comment on the deployment on the Syrian side of the border.
