Australia Gets A New Prime Minister”

The government of Indonesia congratulated Scott Morrison on his being elected the new Australian prime minister, replacing Malcolm Turnbull, according to a written statement from the Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs here on Saturday.

Part of why Australian leadership has changed so often has to do with party rules.

A successful Treasurer, and before that, Minister for Immigration and Border Protection and Minister for Social Services, Morrison has presided over a period of strong economic growth and job creation.

Liberal Party leader Malcolm Turnbull became our PM in 2015 after beating Tony Abbott in a leadership spill.

Although he first entered Parliament in 2007, Mr. Morrison first rose to the public's attention as immigration minister and his introduction of tough asylum seeker policies alongside offshore detention centres for processing illegal arrivals.

The ruling Liberal-National coalition government has consistently trailed the opposition Labor party in opinion polls, but Turnbull has remained the voters' preferred prime minister over Labor leader Bill Shorten.

Malcolm Turnbull officially handed in his commission as prime minister and has told Morrison he will soon leave Parliament.

Former treasurer Scott Morrison looks set to become Australia's 30th Prime Minister following a leadership vote on Friday, ending a week of chaos in the country's capital.

Cormann, the finance minister, had publicly stated his support for Turnbull on Wednesday, but on Thursday said Dutton should lead the government.

"Our job... is to ensure that we not only bring our party back together, which has been bruised and battered this week, but that will ensure we bring the Parliament back together, that we can continue to work to ensure that our country stays close together".

He also condemned Dutton and said that "many Australians will be shaking their heads in disbelief at what's been done".

There was disquiet, too, within the Liberal Party.

Police say Jones drove away from the scene, and Szabo was transported to a hospital, where on Tuesday he died from his injuries. Police arrested Jones, of Kernerville, North Carolina, on Thursday and charged him with third-degree assault.

Mr Dutton's and Mr Turnbull's camps waged the most chaotic, frenetic and at times farcical leadership struggle that Australian politics has seen in years, closing down Parliament on Thursday so that the government could focus on it its rapidly escalating internal crisis.

Morrison presided over Australia's economy as the government sought to return the budget to surplus and simultaneously cut personal income and small business taxes.

However, Kefford said, Morrison is facing an uphill battle if he wants to retain his title through upcoming elections in May 2019. Turnbull did not contest the ballot and has said he will quit politics.

His new deputy Josh Frydenberg was Turnbull's environment and energy minster and was responsible for developing the climate policy.

The Treasurer edged out Peter Dutton, 45 to 40 in a partyroom meeting in Canberra on Friday afternoon.

Mr Di Natale's comments came after he yesterday stood up in parliament to condemn the backroom dealing by Mr Turnbull's enemies who had huddled to unseat him.
