Rescue operation suspended after 8th boy freed from Thai cave

Rescue operation suspended after 8th boy freed from Thai cave”

They were discovered alive last Monday deep inside the flooded cave system.

The Thai Navy Seals leading the operation say eight boys have now been extracted from the cave and will now work to extract the four boys and their coach who remain trapped inside the cave system.

Officials had said before restarting the efforts that they hoped to have all nine people remaining in the cave rescued by the end of Monday local time.

Ambulances and rescue crews have returned to the Tham Luang Nang Non cave in northern Thailand for a second operation to free more trapped boys.

The rescue operation was started on Sunday as more rain is expected this week, which would make it harder to rescue the boys.

Elon Musk's Space X rocket company tested a "tiny kid-sized submarine" that could potentially help the children through the narrow, flooded cave passageways.

The rescued boys had to travel about 2 1/2 miles with oxygen tanks, making their way back to the cave's entrance using a 3-mile rope.

The four boys who were evacuated on Sunday are said to be doing well. Thailand's Meteorological Department said there was a 60 percent chance of rain Monday with thunderstorms forecast throughout the week, the Associated Press reported. Two of them possibly have a lung infection but all eight are generally "healthy and smiling", he said.

Foreign Minister Julie Bishop this morning said lessons from the initial effort would be applied as two more groups of four are brought out of the cave.

"The next step is to make sure those kids and their families are safe because living in a cave has a different environment, which might contain animals that could transmit any disease", a hospital statement said.

"Visitors will only be allowed to meet and talk to the patients", he said.

Giving an update on the four boys pulled from the cave Sunday, Narongsak said, "This morning, they said they were hungry and wanted to eat khao pad grapao" - a popular Thai rice dish of meat stir-fried with basil and chili peppers. Previously, round trips through the cave network would take about 11 hours.

The operation paused Sunday evening so that rescue teams could refresh the supply of air tanks that have been placed along the escape route inside the cave, Narongsak said.

Shortly after, ambulances were seen racing toward the nearby city of Chiang Rai down roads that had been cleared of traffic to smooth the journey. Onlookers were seen watching and cheering as they drove by.

MAE SAI, Thailand With time running short and storm waters threatening to rise, a team of elite divers made preparations Monday to lead a second group of boys from the depths of a flooded cave where they and their soccer teammates have been trapped for two weeks. Thai Navy SEALs later announced two more had been freed in what Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn called a "very smooth operation".

- Japan have qualified out of the World Cup group stage for the third time in their history, also doing so in 2002 and 2010. However, Colombia's goal in the 74th minute of the other group match meant Japan was in second place and would advance.

He first tweeted about the situation in Thailand, which has been watched closely across the world since the boys and their coach were all miraculously found alive after nine days underground, on 4 July, saying he would be "happy to help if there is a way to do so". So the sub still could come into play on a third day of rescues.
