North Korea repatriates possible remains of US Korean War soldiers

North Korea repatriates possible remains of US Korean War soldiers”

In June, U.S. President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un signed a statement saying they would seek "to establish new U.S. -DPRK relations in accordance with the desire of the peoples of the two countries for peace and prosperity", using the initials of the North Korea's official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. "Thank you to Kim Jong Un".

The remains, which Pyongyang agreed to return after Kim Jong Un and U.S. President Donald Trump's historic June summit, were being transferred to the United States's Osan Air Base in South Korea.

"The United States owes a profound debt of gratitude to those American service members who gave their lives in service to their country and we are working diligently to bring them home", the White House said. "We are encouraged by North Koreas actions and the momentum for positive change". Remains that were returned in the past from North Korea were found to have been mixed with those of unidentified people and even with animal bones.

According to the New York Post, the Hermit Kingdom recently dispatched "two truckloads of wooden boxes" that are to be used for the transportation of those American soldiers killed in the Korean War.

Why are U.S. remains in North Korea?

The transfer took place Friday local time, which marks the anniversary of the armistice that halted the Korean War in 1953. The first step toward advancing this longer process, which was the last item both leaders agreed to, is North Korea's return of the remains of the U.S. servicemen from the war. North Korea has previously delivered such false "remains" as recently as in 2011.

According to USA officials, North Korea is estimated to have as many as 200 sets of remains ready for delivery. Some days later, Trump alleged that the remains were already home.

The United Nations Command said 55 cases of remains were retrieved from North Korea.

Trump and Kim appeared at ease with one another during the summit.

"It is believed to have landed there an hour later", the official was quoted as saying. There are also believed to be 184 individual remains at a cemetery in Pyongyang.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited Pyongyang, the North Korean capital, this month to urge North Korea to go forward with Kim's commitments. The North also said US officials came up with various "conditions and excuses" to backtrack on the issue of formally ending the war.

Pompeo said Wednesday that a great deal of work remains ahead of a North Korea denuclearization deal, but he dodged requests to identify a specific denuclearization timeline in testimony to members of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee.
