Croatia sack coach over 'glory to Ukraine' video

Croatia sack coach over 'glory to Ukraine' video”

Hosts Russia were defeated 4-3 on penalties by Croatia in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

A team spokesman, speaking about the video, said Vida "regrets" it.

While the Reds improved defensively in the second half of the 2017/18 season, the questions that have been asked about their defensive frailty in the past could tempt Jurgen Klopp to move for another defender such as Vida this summer.

Croatia take on England in Moscow on Wednesday for the right to play either Belgium or France in the final. Later on Saturday night, anti-Croatian chants were heard in the centre of Moscow.

Vida scored an extra-time goal in the match and converted one of Croatia's penalties in the shootout win in Sochi.

"We can confirm that FIFA's disciplinary committee has sent a warning to the player Domagoj Vida due to his video statement following the 2018 FIFA World Cup match between Russian Federation and Croatia", FIFA, the sport's worldwide governing body, said Sunday. Both have formerly played for club team Dynamo Kiev.

"There's no politics in football".

The 29-year-old defender of the Croatian national team said in his statement that he had "no political message" in his statement.

In the video, Vukojevic added: "This victory is for Dynamo (Kiev) and for Ukraine!". It was definitely no political message, but a simple thank you for all the support from Ukraine, where Vukojevic and I spent a number of years.

The Croatian FA had issued a press statement on Sunday attempting to clarify the incident and calling on players to avoid sending messages that could be deemed to be politically provocative.

Uruguay vs. Portugal - Football Match Report
Uruguay is the only team that didn't concede a goal in the first round - in a group containing Russia, Saudi Arabia and Egypt. And up front they boast two of the greatest goal-scorers of their generation in Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani .

"Our intention was not to offend anyone".

"I would never want to be a burden to the national team, especially not ahead of a match as monumental as the World Cup semi-final, when the team is most in need of a peaceful atmosphere", Vukojevic said.

Earlier this week, Ukrainian goalkeeper Mikhail Gotra had his contract with FC Karpaty terminated for cheering on Russian Federation on his Instagram page following their round-of-16 win over Spain. In the meantime, Domagoj Vida apologized, and Federation Internationale de Football Association decided against suspending the player. Switzerland captain Stephan Lichtsteiner was warned and fined 5,000 Swiss francs ($5,050) for joining in the celebration.

The player had earlier said the message was "just a joke".
