Carr Fire: Park employees save 50 vulnerable animals by taking them home”

The Carr Fire in Northern California that has claimed the life of a bulldozer operator and injured at least three firefighters is "taking everything down in its path", a fire official said.

The blaze has crossed the Sacramento River and now threatens hundreds of homes on the western fringes of the city of Redding (Picture: AP) 'There have been some injuries to civilians and firefighters.' (Picture: AP) Roads out of the city, which is home to 90,000 people, have been left jammed with motorists trying to escape the flames.

Employees at the Turtle Bay Exploration Park in Redding took Whisper the bobcat, Loki the fox and nearly 50 other animals home with them Thursday night to keep them safe from the deadly Carr Fire, said Turtle Bay CEO Mike Warren.

Weather conditions are exacerbating the fire, with hot and windy weather fanning the flames, causing the wall of fire to grow larger.

"It was literally a firenado barreling down on Redding", they said. Making matters worse, the National Weather Service predicts temperatures in Redding will hit 110 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday, prompting the service to issue an "excessive heat warning".

The staff of KRCR News, a Redding station that had been providing excellent live coverage of the fire's descent into the city, were forced to evacuate their studio late last night. Fire officials said the mechanical failure of a vehicle sparked the blaze on Monday.

Two weeks ago, a firefighter died fighting the Ferguson Fire east of San Francisco when a bulldozer overturned. The fire is now more than 5,000 acres.

A wildfire in rural Shasta County in Northern California tripled in size overnight, and more evacuations have been ordered.

The area around the bridge was one of the locations evacuated due to the fire.

There are more than 1,700 firefighters working to control the flames, of which only six percent are contained so far.

Fire crews continue to battle a brush fire Thursday morning that was "still growing" one day after it was started by suspected arsonist in the Idyllwild area the day before. But it wasn't swift enough to spare them all.
