Belgium come from two down to beat Japan in thriller”

Belgium completed a remarkable revival as they came from the World Cup abyss and beat Japan to reach the quarter-finals.

Jan Vertonghen and Marouane Fellaini scored to make it 2-2, before Nacer Chadli stuck a late, late victor.

Belgium will now have a match against Brazil in the quarterfinal, where a 2-0 deficit might be a bit more devastating.

Belgium were shellshocked but they found themselves two down just four minutes later when Takashi Inui powered home Shinji Kagawa's lay-off to beat Courtois from 25 yards.

Unfortunately for Japan, the lead would prove short-lived.

Coach Roberto Martinez shuffled his deck, however, and after a freak goal from Jan Vertonghen, substitute Marouane Fellaini stepped up with a header to level the tie.

The Red Devils were still struggling but they pulled a goal back after 69 minutes when Vertonghen looped a header from a high clearance back across goal into the far top corner.

The third match saw Japan getting beaten 1-0 by Poland but still advancing to the knockout stages as the second in H after Senegal were eliminated on Fairplay rule. Courtois launched the ball up field and Lukaku dummied a cross from Thomas Meunier, leaving it for Chadli to slot in for the match victor.
