Executive order does not include plan to reunite children with parents

Executive order does not include plan to reunite children with parents”

President Donald Trump is reportedly considering signing an action that would prevent the separation of illegal immigrant parents from their children. Mr Trump's administration has launched a "zero tolerance" approach to these crossings, meaning everyone who passes is sent for criminal proceedings. Trump and his allies argue that some immigrants released did not show up for court cases.

Trump administration officials say they have no clear plan yet on how to reunite the thousands of children separated from their families at the border since the implementation of a zero-tolerance policy in which anyone caught entering the USA illegally is criminally prosecuted. The separation of children from parents has led to bipartisan protest across the United States and Congress as images of children in cages and sounds of crying babies dominated the news and social media.

An earlier report from Fox News Channel said the Trump administration was considering an executive order that would allow immigrant families who cross the border illegally to stay together longer than is now permitted.

"The government clearly had no plan in place" for reuniting separated families, said Katharina Obser, a senior policy adviser with the Women's Refugee Commission.

A spokesperson for the Department of Health and Human Services - which is responsible for housing and caring for the already separated children - told NBC News it has no new orders on how to handle the children in its custody.

A subsequent ruling in 2016 bars the government from keeping children in family detention centers for more than 20 days.

Posting on Twitter today, he once more attacked the Democrat Party.

"Right now we're focused on getting this bill passed", he said. The children are put into the custody of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services with the aim of keeping them as close to their parents as possible and reuniting the family after the case goes through the courts, said Steven Wagner, an acting assistant secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services.

Still, Trump's order is likely to create a new set of problems involving length of detention of families, and may spark a fresh court fight.

That means that an average of about 65 children per day were separated from their parents along the US-Mexico under the administration's zero-tolerance initiative.

"And then she's going to be the one responsible for separating families", said Arthur, now a senior fellow in law and policy at the Center for Immigration Studies (CIS) in Washington, D.C.

Josseline Garcia, the younger sister, told The Associated Press she knew that ICE could detain them indefinitely.

It is not clear what will happen if the administration is unable to secure an amendment to the Flores agreement.

The Trump administration has been under increasing pressure from the public, religious leaders and Democrats in Congress, as well as most Republicans to end the practice of separating children from parents at border detention facilities. "We reject this false choice".

The order requires the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to, "by the extent permitted by law and subject to the availability of appropriations", hold in custody families, or members of families, who face pending criminal charges for illegal entry or other immigration proceedings-that is, both criminal and administrative proceedings. "We are going to take action to keep families together while we enforce our immigration laws".

The lines of asylum seekers at some locations on the border seem to have waned in recent days as the USA government's treatment of migrants has come under scrutiny.
