LDS Church discontinuing relationship with Boy Scouts

LDS Church discontinuing relationship with Boy Scouts”

The Mormon church and the Boy Scouts of America are ending their partnership after 105 years as the church's worldwide membership grows and it develops youth programs that are more aligned with its own teachings.

Matthew Bowman, a history professor at Henderson State University, said that gay troop leaders was one of the factors in the LDS Church's decision to create a new scouting program.

In November, the Mormons made an announcement proclaiming that the church's teens ages 14 to 18 would no longer take part in the Boy Scouts' programs as of January 2018, and instead would implement their own program for older boys.

In a separate statement, the church said it plans to introduce new youth programs in 2020.

The Boy Scouts decided in 2015 to allow gay troop leaders and announced previous year it would allow girls in its ranks.

Barca hold Madrid to remain unbeaten
Karim Benzema then headed the ball across goal and Ronaldo was there to finish the move, nipping ahead of Gerard Pique to score. After Luis Suarez had put the hosts in front at Camp Nou just 10 minutes in, Ronaldo levelled matters just four minutes later.

Steven Crowder, a CRTV host, complained that allowing girls to join the Boy Scouts of America is "cultural appropriation" of what he insists is "male culture".

Others lambasted controversial histories of the Mormon Church, such as its opposition to same-sex marriage, and its patriarchal roots asserting dominance over Mormon women.

In a joint statement, the church said that both organizations have benefitted from the relationship, but after over 100 years, the relationship had run its course.

The Scouts will still welcome Mormon youth into local packs and troops, said Effie Delimarkos, a spokeswoman for the Boy Scouts of America. However, past year it did remove some 185,000 boys between the ages of 14 and 18 from the Boy Scouts, instead turning them towards church-based community service. Many individual troops are chartered by faith-based organizations, however, and Mormons make up around 20 percent of its membership, according to The Washington Post.

As the Mormon Church leaves the Boy Scouts, there will be a loss in funding.
