On Friday, the walkouts were sparked by 16-year-old Lane Murdock, a Ridgefield High School in CT, who began an online petition on Change.org calling for the protest following the February shooting in Parkland, Florida, that left 14 students and three staff members dead. "I came out here today because I had heard from those in the school that wanted to come out here but couldn't so I am here for them and myself". Another protester's sign said "I have a dream".

She addressed the crowd on Friday afternoon, beside the park's arched monument to George Washington, and said, "We have been practicing school lockdowns since kindergarten".

Students nationwide also took part in walkouts on March 14 in the wake of the shooting deaths of 17 students and staff at Florida's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

Across the nation, students walked out of class at the same time in each time zone to observe a moment of silence for shooting victims, and push for gun reform.

They thought this was about taking guns away, but we don't want to do that, we just want more control to get a gun so there are less shootings".

She said, "We will not stop until 58 people can walk into a concert, 49 people can walk into a club, 20 first graders can walk into their classroom, 17 students can walk into their school, 12 people can walk into a movie theater, one black man can walk into his grandmother's backyard and all of them can walk out".

Toward the end of the rally, student organizers read their mission statement of specific legislation they want lawmakers to enact.

Rally organizers called for changes including bans on assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.

After the rally, numerous student participants sat down in front of a table set up at the base of the Capitol stairs to hear a group that included five state Democratic lawmakers answer previously submitted questions.
