Power in Puerto Rico largely restored after islandwide blackout

Power in Puerto Rico largely restored after islandwide blackout”

"With power having been restored to over 95 percent of the Island before this temporary outage, Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority officials have ensured us they are quickly addressing the situation to investigate the cause of this incident and restore power as quickly as possible" PRTC officials said.

The priority is to restore service to critical structures such as hospitals, the airport, water pumps and banks, according to the agency's Twitter account.

The new blackout occurred as Puerto Rico legislators debate a bill that would privatize the island's power company, which is $14 billion in debt and relies on infrastructure almost three times older than the industry average.

An island-wide blackout has struck Puerto Rico, plunging the USA territory of more than 3 million citizens back into darkness more than seven months after local and federal officials began working to restore a fragile power grid demolished by Hurricane Maria.

But lady luck would not have it, Just a few hours later on, a backhoe, operating to close to a fallen 140-foot transmission pillar, on the southerly area of the isle, got far too close to that power line.

"Together with PREPA, we look forward to fully restoring power across the island and bringing a sense of normalcy back to the people of Puerto Rico", Straehla said.

Angel Figueroa, president of a union that represents power company workers in Puerto Rico, told reporters that it appears a failure caused the entire electrical grid to shut down to protect itself.

In 2016, 47% of Puerto Rico's electricity came from petroleum, 34% from natural gas, 17% from coal, and 2% from renewable energy, the EIA reports.

Due to its contracts in Puerto Rico, Mammoth Energy Services, the parent company of Cobra Acquistions, saw the biggest gain in its stock price of any Oklahoma-based company during the first quarter of 2018. The next hurricane season is less than two months away.

"Puerto Ricans are still dealing with constant setbacks and unreliable power", said Sen.

"Well, right now we're still as motivated as ever", Major Carrasco said. Outdated power grids like the one in Puerto Rico are becoming less reliable so southern US states such as Texas, Florida, and Louisiana as well as Caribbean Islands started to show more interest in solar energy.

"The outage snarled traffic across the island, interrupted classes and work, and forced dozens of businesses to temporarily close, including the largest mall and popular tourist attractions like a 16th Century fort in the historic part of Puerto Rico's capital", Coto wrote.

Individual faults, such as the one that occurred in southern Puerto Rico, can have a ripple effect on the grid because the island lacks sufficient generation reserves to continue operation when one plant or transmission line goes offline, Jorge Camacho, a former District of Columbia regulatory staffer who is now working with the National Institute of Standards and Technology told Utility Dive.
