Checks ordered on engine type in jet accident

Checks ordered on engine type in jet accident”

The European Aviation Safety Agency on Friday ordered emergency checks on some Boeing 737 jet engines, followed by regular inspections, in response to two Southwest Airlines engine blowouts including a deadly accident earlier this week.

The directive comes after the left engine of Southwest Airlines Flight 1380 suddenly blew apart during a Tuesday flight from NY to Dallas. "The housing of the engine is supposed to contain these fan blade failures", Gadzinski said.

Nearly 700 Boeing 737 engines will need to be inspected worldwide over the next 20 days, regulators say.

Initial National Transportation Safety Board inspections of the Southwest engine showed a fan blade had detached and there was evidence of metal fatigue in the fractured blade.

Fan blades that have undergone a certain number of flights will be given ultrasonic tests, they added. Federal safety investigators have said the naked eye can not detect the cracks and signs of metal fatigue that doomed the engine on Southwest Flight 1380.

"CFM suggests ultrasonic inspections within the next 20 days to buff blades of CFM56-7B motors with more than 30,000 cycles since brand new", it said.

Man, 83, set to be executed for judge's mail-bomb slaying
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall commented on the execution, saying that justice had been served in the case. "Tonight, Mr. Zeigler said Moody's long period on death row also meant taxpayers had to foot the bill for his room, board and medical expenses.

Though aircraft engine failures are very rare and the CFM56-7B engine has an otherwise excellent safety record, the two apparently similar engine failures have left some aviation experts concerned.

He could not say if the incident indicated a fleet-wide issue with the Boeing 737-700. Sumwalt said the crack was not detectable from the outside.

Southwest, which had opposed efforts by the engine maker previous year to shorten the FAA's earlier proposed deadline, on Friday said its maintenance program meets or exceeds the new requirements.

If a discrepancy is detected on an affected fan blade, it must be replaced before flying again, the EASA directive states.

CFM International had issued a similar recommendation in 2016 after the failure of a CFM56-7B engine on another Southwest aircraft. Federal investigators blamed an undetected defect in the titanium alloy which led to a metal fatigue fracture.
