Google's $300 Million Initiative Fights Fake News, Helps Publishers Generate Revenue”

"In the blog post, Google announced their new "Google News Initiative" (GNI), a project devoted to curbing the spread of misinformation online by "[elevating and strengthening] quality journalism", "[evolving] business models to drive sustainable growth" and "[empowering] news organizations" through technological innovation.

Google is launching a new initiative to make it easier for users to subscribe to their favorite news sites, without leaving the service, or engaging in a lengthy sign-up process. Talking about Google's own products, the company is tweaking its systems to surface more authoritative content in times of breaking news moments because that's when bad actors often target platforms, the company says.

Allegre said early results from the Shopping Actions program showed the average size of retailers' online shopping baskets has increased by 30 percent, a sign that consumers want the convenience of shopping directly from their Google searches. The search engine said it plans to add more news publishers soon.

Marshall upsets Wichita State for 1st NCAA Tournament victory
After a long video review, the referees awarded the ball to Marshall, and Penava had a slam dunk off an inbounds pass. The 6-foot-3 Elmore held up even though he was guarded by bigger opponents.

In addition to subscribing to news outlets, you'll find articles from those you subscribe to with highlights in Google Search results. However, in an arena where its biggest rival Facebook has been hit with criticism for de-prioritising publishers in its news feed, Google's updates can also be read as a clear signal of intent that Google is willing to invest to get its publishing partners to continue working with the business.

Fairfax has signed on as the local launch partner while papers as the Financial Times, The Telegraph, The New York Times and Washington Post have signed on in the United Kingdom and US.

The Google News Initiative will help news organisations diversify their revenue streams through a new platform that will make it easier for readers to become paid subscribers by using their Google account to purchase and manage their payments.

The new initiatives aim to "build a stronger future for news" and the fund will be used to support products and partnerships with publishers.

At the same time, Google is working with news organizations to combat misinformation. It was one of several announcements the search giant made in NY to improve ties with publishers whose content helps Google sell advertising.

Also helping to achieve this goal is a new open-source tool called "The Outline" that'll allow news organizations to easily create their own VPN for securely sharing sensitive data across the internet. "We'll be expanding that model globally".
