Chaos in Melbourne as Pell fronts court

Chaos in Melbourne as Pell fronts court”

This unprecedented legal showdown will attract a huge global media presence at Melbourne Magistrates Court as Cardinal George Pell arrives for the committal hearing for his historic sexual abuse case.

Up to 50 witnesses could be called during the four-week committal hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates Court, which will be closed to the media and public for up to two weeks while they give their accounts.

Cardinal Pell was charged by detectives from Victoria Police's Sano taskforce in June a year ago and was granted leave by the Pope to return to Australia from the Vatican to fight the charges.

He stepped aside from from his role in Rome when he was charged by Sano Task Force on multiple allegations of historic sexual abuse in June previous year.

The cardinal has denied the allegations.

Judy Courtin, a lawyer who specialises in representing victims of historic sexual abuse, said the pressure on the complainants when they will be cross-examined by the famously thorough Mr Richter will "be enormous".

The court will be closed to the public when witnesses give testimony and are questioned.

Apple Is Readying A Pair Of High-End Over-Ear Headphones
A pair of wireless headphones, to rival those produced by Bose, Sennheiser, and Beats itself, seems like a logical step for Apple. The headphones may be released later than the target date and could even be scrapped altogether, according to the report.

"It is a guide to police about how to fairly investigate claims against prominent people", he told Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.

"These documents are certainly relevant to the alleged offences", he said.

Crown prosecutor Mark Gibson SC sought permission for witnesses giving evidence to have access to a "victim support dog".

During a 25-minute hearing on Monday morning, Pell's lawyer argued for witness statements he described as "exculpatory" (in favour of the defendant) to be included in the brief of evidence to magistrate Belinda Wallington.

Richter responded: "I always thought dogs were there for children and very old people, but if they want a dog ...", to which Wallington replied: "They're also for vulnerable people".

Pell, 76, is the highest-ranking Catholic official to be accused of sexual offenses.

Prosecutors on Friday withdrew one of the charges, relating to a complainant who died after the criminal proceedings began in 2017.

Lesnar to exit WWE, will make UFC comeback
Expect Paul Heyman , Lesnar's mouthpiece, to make reference to the possibility of his client jumping ship to the UFC in April. It could very well be that Lesnar opted not to come to Raw as part of hardline negotiating tactics with WWE .

Richter asked for Pell to be allowed a priest as a support person, owing to his age and a medical condition.

The case places both the cardinal and the pope in potentially perilous territory.

Pell has so far not been required to enter a plea.

His defence barrister, Robert Richter QC, stated at his first hearing in July previous year "Cardinal Pell will plead not guilty to all charges, and will maintain the presumed innocence that he has". For Francis, they are a threat to his credibility, given that he famously promised a "zero tolerance" policy for sex abuse in the church.

When Pell was promoted in 2014, he was already facing allegations that he had mishandled cases of clergy abuse during his time as archbishop. And he did not force the cardinal to resign.

The former Sydney and Melbourne archbishop and Ballarat priest was heckled as he arrived and left the court building by vehicle.
