USDA proposes replacing food stamps with delivery service, added work requirements

USDA proposes replacing food stamps with delivery service, added work requirements”

The Trump administration wants to replace food stamps with a "Blue Apron-type" program that sends low-income families a box of preselected foods.

President Trump's 2019 budget request would prevent food-stamp recipients from using the program to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables, requiring them to receive a box of processed foods instead.

"On Monday, the Trump administration proposed cutting food stamps, formally known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, by $17 billion in 2019 and more than $213 billion over the next decade".

"Peanut butter is a shelf-stable, protein-packed food that the majority of Americans enjoy, so it seems only fitting to include as a product in the potential harvest box", the group said in a statement, noting that it already donates peanut products to food banks. The box would be valued at about half of the SNAP recipient's monthly benefit.

The remaining benefits would be issued via the traditional benefits card.

According to a summary of the proposal compiled by the Agriculture Department, the goal of the program is to cut costs and would save the federal government $129 billion over a decade.

However, she said having no fresh fruits and vegetables in the box, as well as recipients not being able to choose what goes into their own, concerns her.

This budget - including this proposal - is morally unsound.

"America's Harvest Box is a bold, innovative approach to providing nutritious food to people who need assistance feeding themselves and their families - and all of it is home grown by American farmers and producers". Jennifer Hatcher, the FMI's chief public policy officer, said that grocers, the USDA and Congress had worked for years to "achieve a national system, utilizing existing commercial infrastructure and technology to achieve the greatest efficiency, availability and lowest cost".

Uttar Pradesh: 46 infected with HIV as a common syringe was used
According to sources, the victims got infected with HIV after the quack used the same needle to inject drugs in many patients. India has registered a 20 per cent annual decline in new infections over the past few years, according to the report.

Critics immediately began questioning the effectiveness of the new program, which is supposedly created to cut costs - but raises many logistical and practical concerns. They say food stamp regulations unfairly target the poor.

The program dubbed "America's Harvest Box" is reported to save America $129 billion over the next 10 years.

Actually, it's the United States' tax burden that is keeping dollars out of local grocery stores and small businesses to support bloated and wasteful government programs like SNAP.

Fifteen percent of OH families are considered food insecure and receive SNAP benefits. They feared it would upend a much-needed benefit for more than 80% of those in the program.
