Chicago Police detectives are investigating a viral Facebook video that apparently depicts child pornography, the department told the Chicago Sun-Times Friday night.

The disturbing video shows a underage girl engaged in a sex act and has been shared across the country.

Deputies are investigating a pornographic video making the rounds on social media.

"Sharing said an image is considered distribution and you could be criminally charged for doing so", the department said on their Facebook page. Law enforcement officers do not know when the incident occurred, KATC reports.

The messages have been spreading through Facebook's Messenger feed and have been reported nationwide.

However, police would like to send out a warning against sharing the video.

Divisions of the Federal Bureau of Investigation issued an advisory Saturday warning against downloading or sharing messages containing such files because that could be considered distribution. Once an image or video like this is reported to Facebook, Facebook notifies law enforcement too. Instead, authorities said you should contact Facebook immediately and deleted the image from your account.

They say some recipients may think sharing the video could help find the person responsible for it. "If you are in possession of (the video), no matter your good intentions, that is also a felony".
