Japan sports leaders not happy CAS overturned 28 doping bans”

Twenty-eight Russian athletes banned from the Olympics for life for doping have had their suspensions overturned and results reinstated by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, days before the start of the Winter Olympics.

Calgary luger Sam Edney didn't mince words Thursday after learning about the Court of Arbitration for Sport's ruling that sanctions against the athletes should be annulled and their individual results at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi be reinstated because of insufficient evidence.

Last year, 43 Russians were banned for life after an International Olympic Committee investigation into state-sponsored doping at their home Sochi Games in 2014.

The court also partially upheld appeals of 11 Russian athletes, replacing a life ban from all Olympic Games with a ban on participating only in the PyeongChang Games.

"This, of course, can not but give us joy", he told reporters.

"The mandate of the CAS Panels was not to determine generally whether there was an organized scheme allowing the manipulation of doping control samples in the Sochi laboratory but was strictly limited to dealing with 39 individual cases and to assess the evidence applicable to each athlete on an individual basis", the ruling states.

Just as people decry Amazon for massive tax avoidance and then promptly go back to shopping online, they are anti-doping but will not deny themselves the pleasure of the 100m final however much the facts suggest they are watching sporting fraud.

169 Russian athletes have already been cleared to compete at the Pyeongchang Games later this month.

Strangely enough, worldwide institutions pedaled back on some of their decisions about the participation of Russian athletes in the Winter Olympics after Russian security officers paid a visit to the United States.

It said it could challenge the CAS rulings at Switzerland's supreme court.

"I'm partly satisfied with the CAS decision because we had a large number of athletes who were exonerated - all the skeleton athletes and some of the bobsledders".

It was not immediately clear how numerous 28 Russians would now seek to compete.

"Not being sanctioned does not automatically confer the privilege of an invitation" to the 2018 Games in South Korea, the International Olympic Committee said in a statement following Thursday's CAS appeal decision.

Kolobkov says "the criteria for not allowing in our athletes. were based on criteria which partly intersect with the conclusions" challenged in the appeal cases, "so this raises a lot of legal questions".

"I don't think it's where we want to be today", she told RTÉ.

The executive board will also examine the presence of North Korea at the Games, their first participation in a Winter Olympics since 2010. Do you collectively punish everybody, including potentially clean athletes, because of the digressions of others who are not clean?

The 28, including Sochi cross-country gold medallist Alexander Legkov, are now eligible to compete in the Pyeongchang Games starting next week, but their presence in South Korea is by no means certain.

"It's not the end to my World Cup career that I was looking for", Edney said on Saturday.
