Intel admits that Meltdown and Spectre patch problems affect newer CPUs

Intel admits that Meltdown and Spectre patch problems affect newer CPUs”

Both Intel and AMD stock dropped shortly after they announced that their chips are vulnerable to Meltdown and Spectre.

The firmware updates do protect Intel chips against potential Spectre attacks, but machines with Ivy Bridge, Sandy Bridge, Skylake, and Kaby Lake architecture processors are rebooting more frequently once the firmware has been updated, Intel said.

"While the firmware updates are effective at mitigating exposure to the security issues, customers have reported more frequent reboots on firmware updated systems", said Navin Shenoy, general manager of the company's data center group, in a statement on Intel's website.

Turkey declares 30 areas in Kurdish province military zones
Rojhat Roj, the YPG spokesman in Afrin, said Kurdish forces will "defend our gains, our territories" in the event of an attack. The U.S. move to create a new army in northern Syria has also been criticized by Turkey and Russian Federation .

"We further recommend that OEMs, Cloud service providers, system manufacturers and software vendors begin evaluation of Intel beta microcode update releases in anticipation of definitive root cause and subsequent production releases suitable for end users".

On Tuesday, as part of its quarterly patch update, Oracle released fixes for 237 flaws across its products, including its first batch of Spectre and Meltdown fixes. Intel also said it had initiated updates for 90% of its processors that are up-to five years old. The Spectre and Meltdown patches appear to degrade performance in certain workloads, as recognized by Intel, so they look for compensation now.

So, in short, these patch problems affect all of Intel's processors, except the original Core 1st-gen CPUs, and the very latest 8th-gen models.

Legislators say they are close to CHIP deal
In December, Congress passed short-term funding for the program - injecting it with $3 billion through March 2018. Orrin Hatch (R-Utah) that revised the cost estimate for a five-year funding extension down to $800 million .

The company also claimed that its AMD CPUs, mostly from the Ryzen generation are not susceptible to the security flaws. Systems running Skylake processors for online transaction processing - a rather large segment of the computing world - can expect to see a four percent decrease in performance thanks to the patches.

Intel says workloads with more user/kernel privilege changes and which spend a lot of time in privileged mode are more adversely impacted. After it was forced to acknowledge the flaws ahead of schedule, Intel insisted in a January 4th press release that "Industry Testing Shows Recently Released Security Updates Not Impacting Performance in Real-World Deployments".

The post highlights other mitigation options that have less of a performance impact, including Google's "Retpoline" security solution, which is said to have nearly no effect on a system's speed.
