Trump plans to replace Tillerson with Pompeo

Trump plans to replace Tillerson with Pompeoā€¯

Citing unnamed "senior administration officials" on Thursday, the New York Times reports that the Trump administration has a detailed plan to push Secretary of State Rex Tillerson out his position and replace him with current CIA Director Mike Pompeo, who would in turn be replaced by the hawkish U.S. Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark.).

Russian Federation has often employed "malicious" tactics against the US and Europe to "drive them apart" and undermine their political and economic successes, US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly developed the transition plan and has discussed it with other officials, the Times reported.

Observers across the political and foreign policy spectrum tend to view Tillerson as a failure at the State Department. Nauert added that Tillerson "serves at the pleasure of the president".

Under the plan, Republican Senator Tom Cotton would be tapped to replace Mr Pompeo at the Central Intelligence Agency, the New York Times reported, citing senior officials.

Kelle Louaillier, president of Corporate Accountability International, said that while ousting Tillerson, former CEO of ExxonMobil, might otherwise be a positive step, having Pompeo in charge of the U.S. State Department would be nothing to celebrate.

But White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders didn't deny it.

Tillerson was reported in October to have privately called Trump a "moron", something the secretary of state sought to dismiss.

Ms Bishop says she has formed a very close personal and professional working relationship with Mr Tillerson and would be "very sorry" to see him go.

The White House insists no change is imminent.

Sen. Cotton, meanwhile, is a staunch conservative and ally to the president, best known for hawkishness on both foreign policy and immigration issues.

A source familiar with Tillerson's thinking said the secretary of state's original plan when he took the job was to leave in February.
