May fails to strike Brexit border deal with Ireland

May fails to strike Brexit border deal with Ireland”

The Prime Minister was within touching distance on Monday of a reaching an agreement with the EU's Brexit taskforce on the so-called "divorce issues" after a frantic day of negotiations in Brussels.

The European Union and Britain ended a flurry of top-level diplomacy on Monday without a deal on the terms of their divorce, as agreement on how to maintain an open Irish border after Brexit slipped out of the negotiators' grasp.

The concession has yet to be accepted by the Irish government.

British Prime Minister Theresa May and Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker met for a crucial working lunch Monday to discuss the U.K.'s offer in the Brexit negotiations.

The UK government has repeatedly insisted many of these questions can not be answered until the next stage of Brexit talks - on a transition period and a future EU-UK trading and customs relationship - is allowed to begin.

In addition, the committed Brexiteers among the DUP argue that if, over time, Northern Ireland diverges from the trading regulations applied elsewhere in the United Kingdom, it could create a barrier to trade within the United Kingdom and prevent Belfast benefiting from any deals London might negotiate in the future. But some doubts are emerging, according to a source present at the discussions, specifically about the status of family members of European Union citizens living in Britain.

Ireland's deputy premier and foreign affairs minister Simon Coveney said the Dublin government's concerns over the post-Brexit border were set to be addressed fully.

"Hopefully we'll find a way forward today", Coveney told Irish state broadcaster RTE.

Mr Rees-Mogg, a prominent Brexiteer who has been talked about as a future Conservative leader, said the prime minister could not agree to different regulatory systems in Northern Ireland and the rest of the EU.

"We are negotiating the British withdrawal as a bloc of the European Union 27 and the other 26 European Union member states will only agree to a solution if the Irish government is in favour", the German MEP, a member of Angela Merkel's CDU party, told ITV. "I'm very confident that we will reach agreement in the course of this week".

"And the problem between the Republic and Northern Ireland is a outcome of the British decision not only to leave the EU but also the single market and the customs union".

But it added that desperately needed shipments of food and medicines to the rebel-held Red Sea port of Hodeida remained blocked. The three-year civil war continues to rage in Yemen, where 10,000 have died and around 3 million people have been displaced.
