Liverpool breaks world record for Van Dijk

Liverpool breaks world record for Van Dijk”

Southampton were furious with Liverpool's conduct at the time, demanding a public apology from their Premier League rivals, but tensions have thawed and a move is expected to be completed as early as next week.

Van Dijk was keen on a move to Anfield last summer and handed in a transfer request at St Mary's, but Liverpool ended their pursuit when Southampton complained the Merseyside club had made an illegal approach for the centre-back.

Liverpool did not reveal the transfer fee but Southampton announced it was "a new world record for a defender".

The transfer breaks the previous world record fee for a defender after Manchester City spent £54million (NZ$102.33m) to sign England global right-back Kyle Walker from Tottenham Hotspur earlier this year.

Notably, the picture is also going to have Matt Damon reprising his role of Linus Caldwell from the original Ocean's Trilogy. Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett star in " Ocean's 8 ", set for June 2018 release.

Van Dijk was Liverpool's primary defensive target after Jurgen Klopp who sees him as an integral asset in solidifying his shambolic backline convinced him to pip Arsenal and City to join his side.

Carragher believes Van Dijk must bring silverware to Anfield and says the 26-year-old must emulate former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, who previously held the title of the world's most expensive defender.

Van Dijk joined Southampton from Celtic during September 2015 and under the terms of that transfer the Scottish club are set to receive a sell-on fee in the region of £S7.5million ($NZ16 million).

"Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool FC player!" he wrote.

"It is a lot of money and I'm not even sure he has been playing that well", Neville told Sky Sports. "But if Liverpool can stop their creaking in big matches when put under pressure then it will be a good deal for Liverpool as well because people will forget about the money that has been spent in a year or two if they can win trophies and get the defence right".

Van Dijk could make his debut in the FA Cup third-round tie against Everton on January 5 after becoming the latest player to move from Southampton to Liverpool.
