Uber hacked, data for 57 million people exposed

Uber hacked, data for 57 million people exposed”

You read that right, Uber got hacked and your personal information with it.

Uber now says it had a legal obligation to report the hack to regulators and to drivers whose license numbers were taken.

Forensic analysis confirmed that the names and driver's license numbers of around 600,000 U.S. drivers, as well as personal information about 57m users - including names, email addresses and mobile phone numbers - had been compromised. The personal information of about 7 million drivers was accessed as well, including some 600,000 USA driver's license numbers.

"None of this should have happened, and I will not make excuses for it", Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, told the publication in an emailed statement. Instead, the company paid hackers to delete the data and keep the breach quiet. As noted in a report from Bloomberg, the breach originally occurred in October of 2016, with Uber working to hide it for a year...

What did Uber pay to cover up the cyber attack?

"Our outside forensics experts have not seen any indication that trip location history, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, Social Security numbers or dates of birth were downloaded", he added. The company immediately took the steps to protect the data and shut down further unauthorized access by the hackers.

As well as trouble potentially brewing in Cali over the hush up, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman has also launched an investigation into Uber's cockup - by our reckoning, perhaps only the fifth worse thing the controversial bad-boy biz has done over the past year.

He said Uber has hired Matt Olsen, a former general counsel at the National Security Agency and director of the National Counterterrorism Center, "to help me think through how best to guide and structure our security teams and processes going forward". The company is also notifying regulators after failing to do so one year ago. "The incident did not breach our corporate systems or infrastructure", Khosrowshahi said.

Israeli PM to discuss Iran, Hezbollah with France's Macron
Mr Aoun said he would not accept Mr Hariri's resignation until it is delivered in person amid calls for his speedy return. Iran has been helping Iraq and Syria with military advisors in their fight against Daesh (IS) and other terrorist groups.

Khosrowshahi said Uber passengers need not worry as there was no evidence of fraud, while drivers whose license numbers had been stolen would be offered free identity theft protection and credit monitoring.

Before the board selected former Expedia CEO Khosrowshahi in August, Meg Whitman was a finalist for Uber chief.

Khosrowshahi said he had only recently learned of the breach, which happened in October 2016. "We are changing the way we do business".

Uber's silence about its breach came while it was negotiating with the Federal Trade Commission about its handling of its riders' information.
