Microsoft unveils plan for Redmond HQ expansion

Microsoft unveils plan for Redmond HQ expansion”

The company has 47,000 employees working at the Redmond campus today and once the expansion is completed there will be space for an additional 8000 staff.

A video of the transformed campus shows that the future Redmond headquarters will look and operate more like small city, featuring a two-acre open plaza that can host 12,000 people, retail space, new jogging and walking trails, two soccer fields, a cricket field, and its own light rail station.

The extension of Microsoft's Redmond campus is a reflection of the company's recent growth, and it also follows other redevelopment projects at Microsoft's offices in Vancouver BC and London. All vehicle parking will go underground, and in its place will spring up sports fields, a tree-lined boulevard, and a two-acre open plaza that can hold up to 12,000 people for events.

Considering that Apple recently opened its new Apple Park campus and Amazon is looking for a second headquarters, Microsoft's expansion plans are not exactly surprising. With the added square footage, the campus' space will be the equivalent of 180 football fields.

Microsoft is overhauling its longtime headquarters with an 18-building construction project that will make room for another 8,000 workers.

The buildings will be closer together, and parking that is now adjacent will be moved underground. We'll also continue to fully fund transit options for employees, including ORCA transit cards, carpool and vanpool, and Microsoft-run employee Connector buses and other vehicles to supplement existing options.

Chris Pratt Pets Baby Raptor In 'Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom' Teaser
In the teaser, leading man Chris Pratt is seen petting and giving a good chin scratch to a baby dinosaur - velociraptor. It appears that he knows what he's doing because the little carnivorous hatchling purrs and cuddles up to his hand.

As part of this new green focus, the campus will be built for pedestrians and bikes.

That transportation emphasis is perhaps the biggest difference from the expansion plan a decade ago.

In their place, and in the acres around them, 18 new buildings will rise, with flexible floor plans meant to foster collaboration, inspiration, and accessibility. A bridge across WA-520, which will link both sides of its campus, will be for cyclists and walkers only.
